"Location: Fantastic! Both train stations and the bus terminal are within sight, making transportation incredibly convenient. There's a large supermarket about 600-700 meters away, which is great for groceries. Room: The triple room isn't small, and the beds are comfortably firm. The heating in the room was a bit strong, and a humidifier would have been nice. Amenities: You can pick up various toiletries at the front desk. On the first floor, there's a self-service coffee and tea bar, which is lovely for relaxing with a drink and enjoying the view after a day out. The hot spring has both indoor and outdoor pools, but there are only five showers. If you go during off-peak hours, it's not crowded. The large public bath only has a hairdryer, no lotions or anything else. Breakfast: The menu changes daily. While not super extensive, the overall quality is excellent. The Japanese curry rice is delicious, and the bread is also good."

Shuttle bus service from Nikko Station ◎ Inexpensive drinks sold in the lobby (It's an inconvenient location, so normally they would overcharge, but they offer them cheaply instead – a thoughtful gesture ◎) Shower and hot spring bath on the room's balcony ◎ We saw staff working diligently day and night on the premises ◎ The shower suddenly turned cold at night ▽ The water heater's power cable was short and dangerous ▽ We wanted a dinner buffet ▽ We had tempura rice bowl and black curry at the restaurant this time, and both were very delicious ◎ (The batter was crispy and the inside was fluffy. I want to go back and eat the tempura rice bowl again. However, the maitake mushroom tempura we ordered as an extra was bite-sized, which was disappointing.)"

"I want to thank hosts of Akari no yado personally. The hosts were nice and worked really hard to feel ourselves at home. The place was clean and the common room was big and comfortable. Bathroom was old fashioned but if you want modern bathrooms you were able to use the bath house for showers and toilets in the common area. Breakfast is made of pastries and all I had was pretty delicious. You can also have marmalade and margarine with breakfast pastries and there are drinks (tea/coffee/milk/juice) to choose from. We checked out early and hosts prepared our breakfast to go even if it wasn’t breakfast time yet. They even drove us to the station when we asked if they would be able to call us a taxi! Bath house was spacious with two different baths. System is easy and we were able to use it whenever we wanted (between 16.00-23.00 of course). They are giving free rental yukatas and they were so comfy. They also have guides everywhere to help you (our room even had a guide on how to prepare a futon bed!) the place felt like we were part of a family and that was the most amazing part for me. I even got teary eyed when it was time to go. Thank you Akari no yado! Hope to see you soon again!"

Unfortunately, the hotel was unable to provide plant-based options, and their response suggested that vegans would need to cancel their reservation entirely. While I understand the challenges of adapting menus, small steps like offering plant-based options could align more closely with the hotel’s stated mission and make it a more welcoming place for all guests. Perhaps because of this, in the East and West wings you have to go out through an outside walkway to get to the main building or the baths, which can be difficult on rainy days. However, there are convenience stores and the station nearby, so I think it's a nice hotel. "From a price-quality point of view, this hotel is quite worthwhile for the unpretentious traveler. The location is in a picturesque place, but away from the main route of Nikko attractions. The hotel is quite old, but this was not too annoying. But dust is wiped only in visible places (no one bothers with anything near the windows or the hatch in the toilet). There was also very little water pressure in the room, although everything is fine in the onsen. The onsen was fine, but on one of the three days the smell of bleach was quite strong. The dinner was good, considering the cost and free alcohol, but the breakfast was quite unusual for a European."
