Satis House Hotel

A bit run down. We paid extra to have a tub in the room, it was NOT the tub shown in the pictures and instead a shower tub unit - the inside of the tub was cracked and peeling, not ideal for taking a bath. The bathroom had an outside door we assumed was locked but it was labelled as an Emergency exit from the hallway and someone walked in on my fiancé taking a shower from the hall!! Very scary as someone could have walked in at any time when we were in the room and when we were out.

Over the years I’ve stayed in many hotels in many different countries, This must be the dirtiest I’ve stayed in.If you don’t look up or behind anything it looks okay but if you do, oh dear!! You could write your name in the dust behind the bed. Cobwebs in the corners and on the ceiling.

We booked online and paid for an early check in. When we arrived there was nobody around except someone gardening near the front who said nothing. Went to the reception desk and someone finally came to meet us. The greeting was basic and laconic. The reception, stairs and corridor to our room smelt strongly of some chemical or other. Our room was immaculate and old fashioned which would have been fine but the bathroom was not great and the “balcony” had a dead plant and was actually just the portico over the front door. Decoration has been kindly called “eclectic” e.g. stuffed animal heads on the wall with their tails. The dining room menu looked basic. We have never left a hotel and especially not so quickly but we both felt very uncomfortable. When we left, again there was nobody around except 2 people in the garden who said they were the owners. We handed back the key but made it clear we would not ask for our money back. There was minimal reaction from the owners, no questions, no look of surprise etc. We booked another hotel about an hour away and they said the Satis once had a good reputation. It was sad to see a once lovely home looking less than at its best and I’m sorry that it’s struggling. I was unsure whether to review a hotel where we stayed for such a short time but can see others have been less than happy too so perhaps our experience was not unique.

The hotel is lovely but there are horrendous building works next door which start at 7am and go on until late. Drilling, banging and people shouting. The scale of the works mean it will be at least another 6 months of disturbance. Don't book unless you get a room on other side of hotel to construction site. Currently not worth the high price.

Satis house - a homely hotel Satis House is, as the owner puts it, "Quirky - due to age" I have stayed twice - each room is different- shape , size, decoration etc however this does not mean comfort , cleanliness and experience is lessened in any way. I am determined to experience as many as possible !! This house has a routine about it and the owners maintain that i.e. you are asked and expected to be on time as Breakfasts are cooked to order and are a great start to the day . Can't wait to try out the Restaurant. am looking forward to the next stay .
