Saruni Samburu

Saruni Samburu is a sight to behold. Pictures just don’t do it justice. Saruni has exclusive rights to the entire Kalama Conservancy which is 95,000 acres in size. It connects directly to the 40,000-acre Samburu National Park. While the combined 135,000 acres is significant, in reality the entire Samburu region is so sparsely populated that it is sensually an extension of the reserves. Only 30% of the animals in Samburu are actually in the reserves. There are no fences so the animals can wander freely. Out of the three camps we stayed at which included Kifaru House in Lewa Conservancy and Saruni Mara in the North Conservancy of Maasai Mara, Saruni Samburu offered the most authentic safari experience in our opinion. This is because relatively speaking there is much less development and because there are no fences. The animals are a more difficult to see because of the vegetation, but it makes it even more special when you do see them. We saw cheetahs, lots of elephants, Grevy zebras and giraffes and many different birds. Somoro was our guide and was excellent at tracking and spotting animals. The camp is beautiful and is set high on a rocky hill/mountain. It is hard to believe they were able to create such a luxurious camp in such a remote and rugged location. We stayed in room 5 which was literally built into the hillside. It had a separate living room and bedroom and a huge bathroom. The views from each were jaw dropping. We were just steps away from the top pool which as a 360-degree view of the area. Each morning, we were greeted by the sounds of birds and sometimes Dasi’s. The food was the best we had on our trip. The Italian food was particularly good. My favorites were the vegetable lasagna, the penne pasta with tomato sauce and meatballs and the spaghetti with a vegetable cream sauce. The desserts also deserve an honorable mention. The staff were friendly and anxious to help us with whatever we needed. Benson the manager runs a tight ship. Nichole was especially helpful as was Steve our server. We opted to visit the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary one day. The drive itself was worth the trip. It gave us a sense for how large Samburu actually is. For 2 hours we drove by the sacred mountain and watched vistas of untouched land pass by. The Sanctuary itself is amazing. The care and sacrifice the community has committed to protecting orphaned elephants is humbling. We watched the noon feeding and learned all that goes in to caring for the beautiful creatures. It turned out to be the highlight of our stay. We are so glad we chose to stay at Samburu Saruni and would love to return.

Nicole s wasn’t staff provide the Best hospitality in Samburu. You are treated as honored guests, and you are treated as beloved family. An amazing experience. Food was delicious and the servers did everything they could to make your meal fit your culinary needs. The views are tremendous as well.

Saruni Samburu was definitely the highlight of my husband and my first African Safari. From the moment our plane landed at Samburu Airport, we knew we were somewhere special and going to remember it forever. We were picked up by Martin #1, our Safari guide for our stay. Our wildlife experiences began immediately on our way to Saruni Samburu Lodge. Giraffes zebras and so many birds. We were welcomed by the Saruni staff with a cold cloth, which was very welcome because of the heat. Martin #2,who greeted us, was so good at telling and sharing his culture with us. they took us to room #5. I cannot say enough good things about the room and the view over Kalama Conservatory. Martin#1 was an excellent guide and tracker. We saw elephants giraffes zebra ostriches birds ,.gerenuks, oryx, cheetahs and a leopard. We could not of asked for more. Thank you Martin for new experiences every time we went on Safari. Martin and his son Erik also took us to Reteti elephant, sanctuary, where they take in orphan elephants thank God for people like them to help animals in need. On the way back we stopped at elephant rock, which is very unique, and had lunch, The meals were always delicious. Always served with a smile. Thank you General and Steve for your kindness. Our time at Saruni was probably the most amazing experience in all our travels. We feel we made several special friends. I recommend this lodge to anyone who wants a true African experience with first class service and accommodations. I’m already working on our return trip to Saruni Samburu. Mark and Diane

My husband and I stayed at Saruni Samburu for the first 3 nights of our honeymoon in Kenya/Zanzibar, and it did not disappoint. I wasn't sure what to expect from my first safari but this far exceeded anything I could have imagined. The camp, rooms and facilities were simply beautiful, with 360 degree views of the conservancy. We could see down to the watering hole from our room and watch the elephants / other animals drink during the early evening, which was fantastic. The food was always delicious, and wonderfully presented. All the little touches made this stay incredible. We must give a special thank you to our guides, Jommy & Eric, who taught us so much about the animals and local culture, as well as General, our dinner butler, who catered to our every need, and always had a smile on his face, joining in for a laugh! We felt so at ease during our stay here and were genuinely very sad to leave. You very much feel at home / part of the Saruni family here. This was the highlight part of our trip and we will definitely hope to return in the future, perhaps for a milestone anniversary!
