We adored the 36-room Shiv Niwas Hotel and you will, too. Adjacent to the City Palace it is quiet and quaint and the heritage property is lovely. Staff at checkin were quick but thorough. We received a welcome gift and drink. A front desk clerk accompanied us to show us our room, a balcony suite that had not one but two balconies, one with a partial view of the lake. It was very comfortable and we enjoyed sitting on the balcony. Because the hotel is part of City Palace complex, no horn honking is allowed, so you are in a tranquil part of India. We ate breakfast both days in the restaurant and it was good, both buffet and eggs and other items to order. We enjoyed the included cappuccino as well. At lunch we were the only guests there and had a nice conversation with our waiter, Sohanlal, who has worked for the hotel for 36 years. It says a lot about a hotel to have such loyal staff. In the Panera Bar we again were the only guests, and enjoyed cocktails while watching the sunset. The bartender, from Nepal, can seemingly make any cocktail. He, too, was a joy to talk to. There bar itself is attractively decorated so I’m adding a photo. In the restaurant they told us that weekday lunches are slow, and in the bar only guests frequent the place so you’ll have no trouble getting in either. We did see more people at dinner but didn’t eat dinner in the hotel The housekeeping staff was very good. We shall miss kind Veeram who did our turndown service. But the front desk gets the highest marks. They went out of their way to help us in any way they could, including arranging for a pharmacy to deliver a medication for me. In particular I would cite Devendra and his concierge colleague whose name I’m afraid I forgot. Great hotel. Great service. Great stay. Sorry to leave.
