We booked The Downs as a base to do a couple of days touring in the area. This is probably the best family run hotel we have stayed in. Our room (No.4) - on the first floor - was a good size with a very comfortable large bed. The view from the balcony was superb and we spent several hours just sitting there, enjoying the view across the Bay and watching the world go by. The staff were very attentive and friendly. On arrival we were offered tea/coffee which was very welcome after a long drive. At the time of our visit, the Hotel was not offering evening meals, but they were more than happy for us to buy food and eat in the room, or in the downstairs reception area or dining room. On the first night we tried to get fish & chips from Hanburys', but the queue was very long so we went around the corner to Drakes' and had fish & chips from there - which was very nice, eating it on our balcony! Immediately to the left and right of The Downs are restaurants and bars - there is a little street noise, but this did not bother us at all. The breakfasts were very good - the full English kept me going all day - and the breakfast menu is far better than you may get in a larger hotel - and the quality of the food was excellent. One reason for choosing The Downs, is that they are "Dog Friendly" - we took two of our smaller dogs with us. Immediately outside The Downs is a promenade area, with great sea views and you can walk down to two nearby breaches. There is a Pay Car Park to the rear of The Downs, which always had spaces - so parking was not a problem. All in all, I would highly recommend The Downs and we hope to return there.
