The Lake Palace is an upscale, niche proposition that caters to discerning travelers who are willing to let go of some creature comfort in exchange for an out-of-the-ordinary experience at a unique location. First, you have to find out about the existence of the Lake Palace which, judging from the surprised and interrogative remarks of fellow passengers each time our party of 3 (1 adult, 2 children) would disembark at the Palace’s jetty, is far from evident. Second, you’ll have to do with no wifi, no mobile phone connection, an extremely limited selection of TV channels, and very few local entertainment options other than reading, relaxing, watching the lake and the shores around it, discussing with other guests, and contemplating life and the universe. (Regarding connectivity, a single bar of 4G would sometime appear, if standing at the right angle, on the right spot, with the wind blowing just right across the lake – but don’t rely on it.) Then there’s the fact that you’re a 15-minute boat ride away from the main jetty of the Periyar Tiger Reserve, a boat that only sails 4-5 times/day, on a precise schedule. So your arrival, your departure, your stints into town, and any excursion you will take must necessarily be carefully planned ahead and coordinated with the boating schedule. No chance of a sudden craving being satisfied by rushing to the nearest shop or restaurant, nor of a late-night change of heart about the next day’s program. For travelers who are actually turned-on by such factors (that includes us), a superbly dedicated staff is making sure that the grounds are maintained, the rooms are kept clean and orderly, delicious meals are prepared then served with care and attention on the terrace, the boat stops by when you need it, and the monkeys are kept off the tables (mostly!) The 3 nights we spent at the Lake Palace, perhaps especially the one night on which we were the only guests, were one of the highlights of our holiday around India. The atmosphere of the place perfectly matched the wildly forested surroundings, in the heart of the Reserve, and was everything we had imagined when originally planning the trip.
