We have just stayed at Cliveden House for one night for the May bank holiday, we're a family of 4 with 2 young children (5 and 2). The stay was fine and we had a good time, in spite of the fact that this hotel is not meant for young families. Starting from the fact that all the rooms we went in were very quiet, and we got a few looks when our children made any noise. We also got no warmth or friendly comments from staff, which is something that we usually get when we go to places with attentive staff. In spite of the fact that they have sessions at the pool where children can go, the lowest depth of the indoor pool is 1.6m, way too deep for small children. The water was also quite cold, there was another family with a very small baby that could not enjoy the pool for that reason. Now let's talk about the service! We have nothing bad to say about the room, the meals we had at the grill or the bar, the breakfast, the fantastic housekeeping or the absolutely stunning location. However, when you go to a 5-star hotel, you sort of expect to have a better service than you would get in non 5-star hotels. We thought the service definitely did not meet expectations. The staff was professional but we had a lot of instances where we thought they lacked warmth and friendliness to the point that they even seemed snobbish. Lots of examples, nothing huge, but just a pattern we noticed, such as: not saying good morning when passing by a member of staff near the reception in the morning (no one else around), or reprimand me because I had been waiting at the wrong reception desk without knowing (the saw me, they could have told me and saved me the time, but somehow I was the one in the wrong), or how the member of staff at the pool seemed annoyed when we approached him to ask questions. We also had 100 pounds credit which they failed to mention at any point, and just found out when I re-read the reservation confirmation email on my last day and asked about it. We apparently had other perks in the booking that we did not get, but it was too late by then. The only time we felt the staff was friendly towards us was breakfast. We probably would still come back as the setting is stunning, it's just that next time we will be better prepared!
