It is attached to the house, however, to access the bathroom, you must leave the log cabin and walk a few steps to the main house. The bathroom is just inside the door of the main house. Remove open food from refrigerator and freezer.History of Home:Our home is registered on the National Register of Historic Places. According to the Department of Interior, sections of the home are thought to have been built in 1788. The full-length front porch outlined by a dry stone wall is one of the unique characteristics of this home. Step back into history with the log cabin, stone chimney, wood beams & wood floors in the kitchen and underground quarters room. The modern Commissioner of the Revenue position was created in 1869 when VA Constitution was rewritten and VA was readmitted to the Union, following the Civil War. After two original cabin buildings were connected by additions in 1889, the home was registered with the newly reformed Commissioner of Revenue. In the 1900's, further additions were added. Unique build designs are evident, such as stairs to accommodate Victorian dresses with petticoats, and a staircase was added on the side for easier access to the upper level. Supposedly used as Headquarters for Colonel Mosby during the Civil War. Colonel John Mosby was a Confederate army cavalry battalion commander in the American Civil War. The NY Times Archives states in an article from The Baltimore American, how in 1864, the Colonel went into the home but was tricked by Corporal Simpson of the 21st New York Infantry Regiment, "leaving Col. Mosby dismounted & outwitted of his best horse, saddle, pistols and overcoat, two Yankee prisoners, and with at least one vacancy among his commissioned officers." This property was originally the current dining room & cabin, thought to be used as a headquarters and area for soldiers, supported by building descriptions in this and other articles. Coffee bars on each floor of the house are stocked with coffee, tea, and creamers and supplies. Well water from the tap is purified though a dual water treatment and high density filtration system and tested. The living areas have beautiful views and accommodate eight people with sofas and comfortable chairs as well as blankets, throws, and electric fireplaces to stay cozy. These areas also have books and toys for children and a wide range of books and games for adults. Bedrooms have dressers and closets and stunning views. Bedding includes two Queen beds and one Full bed, as well as three extra large twin bed cots with metal bed frames and memory foam mattresses as well as additional single memory foam beds if needed (all with pillows, blankets, and linens). Air conditioning is in all three bedrooms along with floor fans. Sheets and pillow cases are provided as well as comforters and blankets. A picnic table, Weber charcoal grill, and fire box with Adirondack chairs is located by the creek. Enjoy breakfast or a drink on a wooden bridge over the stream at the opening of the woods. The front porch on ground level overlooks a stream complete with chairs and side tables for dining. The glassed porch on the second level overlooks the mountain and has a table and chairs for a meal with a sitting area and coffee station. The back porch faces the woods and is open-air.Note that the home is located on 45 acres of forest at the foot of a mountain and local wildlife is present and may be seen on the grounds. We ask guests to keep pets under control to avoid any harm to wildlife. Also, because 3 Penny Acres is a historic rural mountain property, occasional seasonal insects (including stink bugs and lady bugs) may be encountered despite regular cleaning and pest management.
