My stay at Summerhouse Hostel in Melbourne was an absolute disaster. This place is infested with bedbugs, and the staff couldn’t care less about their guests’ well-being. After waking up covered in itchy, painful bites, I immediately reported the issue to staff. Instead of moving me to a different room, they simply washed my sheets and clothes—but left me in the same bed. Unsurprisingly, I woke up the next morning with even more bites, making my stay unbearable. When I asked to file an injury report, I was brushed off and told to come back when a manager was available. Meanwhile, I had to spend $27 on pharmacy treatments and was advised that a doctor’s visit would cost me another $100—an expense I couldn’t afford. Even after staff confirmed that my bites were from bedbugs, they still refused to move me, offering nothing but fresh sheets and towels instead. I sent a formal complaint outlining the physical, emotional, and financial toll this took on me, but they ignored me completely. No refund, no compensation, not even a response. This level of negligence is unacceptable and a clear violation of Australian Consumer Law. Summerhouse Hostel is an absolute disgrace. If you value your health, sanity, and money, STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE. I’ll be escalating my complaint to Consumer Affairs Victoria and health authorities so no one else has to go through this.
