University Plaza Hotel

Don’t know where to start! Totally not worth the price. Motel 6 would have been a better choice. Over priced for outdated hotel. Old dirty carpet, torn wallpaper small room cracked shower, no mini fridge, no microwave, a small cracked dirty pool and the icing on the cake-as if the hotel wasn’t disappointing enough, they charge you an additional 75 dollars on check in just in case! In case of WHAT! 10 of that is non refundable because they charge you for parking in an old uncovered parking lot. Horrible hotel experience!

My son and I traveled to Springfield to visit Missouri State University. It was a 5 hour drive in so we arrived around 10pm, ready to get checked in and head to bed before a busy day the next morning. Interaction at the front desk consisted of asking for ID and credit card, handing me the keycard and pointing at the elevator, then she walked away. The lobby is open to the whole interior of the hotel and had around 50 people in it who were drinking from the bar and hanging out, it was loud. Get settled in for bed and the noise continues, because the party in the lobby can be heard in our 4th floor room. I went down to the front desk at 11pm to ask how long the party in the lobby was going to continue. She shrugged and said I don’t know. Another front desk attendant said the only thing they could do is call security because technically it was quiet hours. The noise continued past midnight, we got very little sleep and were woke up around 7am by a woman down in the lobby laughing and talking loudly and 8am was a large group of people singing happy birthday. To make matters worse, the room was so dirty. Urine and hair around the toilet and mold on the ceiling in the bathroom. Dirty and ripped carpet, stains all over the ceiling and one with a 6” thing hanging from it. Stained curtains that were torn and didn’t close completely so the sun was in the room. We stayed because it was late and we had already paid. The front desk was unhelpful and honestly I didn’t know what else to do.

My husband and I were here for a meeting. When we arrived on Monday afternoon, we were told that they were short staffed and our room would not be ready for awhile but they would let us know and they didn't. Our group had a block of rooms (400)? reserved for this event so we were not the only ones not getting checked in. We arrived at 2:30 pm and finally was checked in 3 1/2 hours later. The room was clean enough, we left on Thursday morning and never had any housekeeping service. The check in staff were nice and friendly, however appeared stressed. The coffee shop was very good and kudos to the young man that was helpful to us. I remember when University Plaza Hotel was built and what it looked like inside. I recall the familiar orange paint and orange colored furniture. The very best part of our room was we could look down onto the parking lot and see where (now torn down) an old Victorian house made into apartments once stood. One of those apartments was where my husband and I started our married life in May 1968.

We have stayed at the university plaza a number of times visiting family in Springfield. Always been reasonably happy. This visit, the first in a. Few years, was very disappointing. Observed deferred maintenance all over the place. Was a little concerning the one of the elevator doors seemed to get suck when trying to open on the first floor most of the time. Stained and wrinkled carpet in the room. Upholstery in the room is worn and stained. Ceiling around the ac unit was damaged. Curtain had tears. Television did not work properly. Ac unit was REALLY loud and worked poorly. Nothing in the room had been ungraded for modern devices, so finding outlets was a challenge. It would not be hard nor expensive to update to lamps with outlets or add various charging blocks at bedside and the desk. Seemed like they give the less expensive TripAdvisor customers the worst rooms. We probably won’t stay there again.

Beware of fraudulent charges to your card. I had book thru PL and after I checked out they proceeded to add charges to my card. I was never able to speak to a person on the phone, it took 2 days for an email response which actual came after a negative review. They sent a receipt saying I purchased a $6 water and a parking charge for $12.76. These were false charges. I know for a fact they were randomly entering stuff to the card because I watched my acct to see when the Incident fee came off. While that was pending they also had a $62 credit pending. The manager Mr Parker, has only responded to a review with what appears to be an automated response regarding how the hotel incidental charge works, which I am very much aware of how it works. There is no option to respond to his reply. I did respond to the email that I finally received from accounting, requesting a refund of the fraudulent charges, but that was 2 days ago and I've heard nothing them. Look elsewhere when needing a room in Springfield. The hotel rooms are very outdated and it is far from being spotless clean.

I wanted to say I am very impressed with this Hotel. Especially the staff. Brandon at the desk was extremely helpful and knowlegable. The hotel restaurant was closed but he was able to make a few recommendations and we ended up going to Cafe Cusco.
