WhyHotel by Placemakr, San Jose

We had a super time once we figured out how to get into the hotel and where to park. Signage wasn't clearly marked. We had to call four times and the phone was always answered. The last time I had the office person stay with me on the phone until I had it figured out. I had a large box delivered prior to arrival and it was there waiting for us. We found a local grocery store, stocked up the kitchen, cooked and ate "at home." I appreciated the security offered by the hotel. My work office was two blocks away so I could walk back and forth and saved money on ubers. The hotel was clean and appeared new and I met some very nice people who were staying for the summer in the gym. I come to San Jose quarterly and plan to stay here again. I loved the large windows and the view I had from the 8th floor.

If you are staying for a weekend or few nights it's a good choice. If you're interested in long stays, then it's an ok choice if you do not cook and are not planning to have any packages/deliveries. We stayed for two months and found only few plates and cutlery (two teaspoons). When we asked for more, we were provided with plastic plates and bowls. Which is better than none I guess. Our packages would often get lost between hotel and the main apartment building and often took days to be found. The reception staff was also pleasant and helpful and I don't want to fault them, it's just a lack of process. Lastly, two days after moving out of WhyHotel to an apartment in the same building my package was stolen from the mailroom by a hotel guest. WhyHotel said they couldn't identify the guest as there were no cameras on the floors, which is a blatant lie. Then also not even bothered to reply to my email asking if potentially house keeping found anything, as this was a parcel containing gift from family. Customer service (and I guess common courtesy) stops after thousands of dollars have been paid and you move out.

Getting into the hotel was a challenge as the security system did not play nicely with the cell phone. Fortunately, a guest took me to level 7 where staff issued me with a security card for my stay. If it was not for this guest, I would have struggled. To be fair, the staff was helpful. The room was clean, quiet, functional but don't expect 5-star hotel level. There was no bottled water, snacks and no tissues so if you are coming late, this could be tricky. So would recommend it for its practicality but just remember it is an apartment that may not have everything you need for a short stay.
