We have been holidaying in the main Canary Islands for over 9 years. As retired people, we’ve been lucky enough to stay for a duration of between 3 – 5 weeks. All the hotels have purported to be 4* and have been centred mainly around 2 hotel chains, namely Barcelo and Dunas. The Dunas we stayed at this year was their flagship hotel. To help you in your choice of holiday, we thought it would be useful for you to see our assessment of how these 2 compare. For Dunas this is as at March 2025 and Barcelo March 2024. This year we have had so many people asking us which was the best hotel chain, in our opinion, that we’ve decided to write a review as the difference between the 2 is quite large and you may want to consider these points before choosing your well-earned holiday. On top of this, as reported at the end, Dunas have treated us very badly and cost us a lot of money, however we would stress that we have been honest and fair in our views and assessment and we would like to think that our issue would not happen to others, although we have been led to believe that it is not an isolated incident. Hotel location – all hotels have been in ideal, picturesque locations. The best room is hard to judge as, as you will see below, there are various matters which some people will not worry about whereas others will find them an issue or beneficial. Dining room – all of the hotels had both inside and outside dining areas, most of which had lovely views. Dunas – food of a reasonable standard and choice. Barcelo – most certainly a much better quality of food and cooking. The quantity of choices was much broader and of a dearer standard. An example of this is at Dunas you only saw King Prawns twice a week, whereas at the Barcelo hotels they were nearly every night. Steak was also very thin and small at Dunas, whereas at Barcelo they were proper restaurant size. Food better covered at Barcelo to prevent spread of germs. Found hot food at Dunas to be lukewarm on occasion. No issues at Barcelo. Only one cooking station at Dunas compared to several at Barcelo hotels. Rooms – all rooms were kept clean and tidy, although the usual issue where maids do not clean under settees, chairs etc. thus leaving dust. On top of this, both hotels had the issue whereby cups and glasses were not cleaned properly after maids visit but, on the whole, definitely good enough for both. To confirm whether your room will have some of the below points, please check the hotel chain. Dunas – the bathroom had free shower gel, soap and hand cream but no other toiletries. They also have the smallest and thinnest toilet paper we’ve ever experienced, which was not pleasant at times! Room was quite sparse for things to brighten it up, such as pictures, despite the fact this was their top-rated room. Both TV’s in the room, and we are informed in all the Dunas chain, do not receive British TV channels. When you are staying for the length of time that we do, we like to keep up w
