Paradisus by Melia Gran Canaria

We were originally booked in the Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote, but our trip was impacted by the terrible floods that impacted the hotel so our booking was changed to the Paradisus Gran Canaria Hotel. Before I go on I want to say that our heart always will be with the Paradisus in Lanzarote which we have visited 3 times previously. Being fans of the Paradisus brand we were really excited to see it in action somewhere else. I must say on the whole we were not disappointed. The staff are wonderful and can’t do enough for you. The attention we received in The Reserve during the day by the pool was exemplary, with regular offers to get drinks, and bringing round snacks and ice creams. The staff in the bars and restaurants work really hard and were always welcoming and cheerful with us. We stayed in a Premium Ocean View room which was a little smaller than the equivalents we have stayed in Paradisus Lanzarote, but it was a lovely room and spotlessly clean. The only gripe was the limited clothes hanging space, led to some double or triple hanging of clothes on top of each other. For us there were we just a few aspects of the hotel that didn’t work for us (although I fully understand they may not apply to everyone). The hotel is not adults only and caters for families, although The Reserve area is for adults only. For us the attraction of the Paradisus brand at the Lanzarote hotel was the feeling of tranquility and relaxation around the whole hotel (one of the reasons we joined the Circle Club). Unfortunately this hotel doesn’t achieve that because it obviously has to cater for families and there are few quiet areas particularly at night where you can escape the excitement and have a quiet drink. Unfortunately the food in the Gastro Hall buffet fell short of our expectations. Often the food was lukewarm and varieties were a little boring. The food in the other restaurants was always top notch. In fact, when faced with going to the buffet we were more happy having a Burger in the Vibra bar instead (which were great). Overall we had a lovely time and this is a brilliant hotel with a few minor quibbles. It wouldn’t be my first choice destination as not providing that Paradisus brand tranquility we love. But definitely a good backup for us.

The hotel is relatively new so once you check in you are wowed by how clean the place is. We upgraded to the reserve (adults only) section which gave us some exclusive benefits. Firstly the ocean view room was well fitted and had great views. You also have the ability to use the Reserve breakfast room in the morning for al la carte breakfast rather than the main hall offering buffet service. The reserve pool area is very nice with Bali beds and sun loungers with great service with drinks , fresh fruit and ice creams. There is 4 fridges that serve all the soft and alcoholic drinks you would require and plenty of light snacks available from 11am. The question I did have before I travelled was the £1700 for 10 days upgrade to the Reserve worth the money? I am still undecided on that question as the standard package would have been £3700 for 10 days and we paid £5400 to include the Reserve area. Apart from separate (small) pool, Bali beds and the Al la carte breakfast the non Reserve get the same access to all the other facilities so maybe saving the £1700 would be better and check into a standard room with the same ocean view. The one thing I also want to mention is the staff, all of them, are fantastic very happy and very attentive to your needs. In summary it’s a great hotel , good food, the best staff of any hotel we have been too and the only choice you need to make is standard of upgrade.
