Mermaid Inn

We stayed here with friends for the weekend and had a great time. The room and bathroom were lovely and clean, and the bottled water was a nice touch. We didn't experience any activity but that was fine! Breakfast was excellent - locally sourced produce and freshly cooked in the kitchen. All the staff were delightful, welcoming and efficient. We will be returning.

Was visiting Rye for bank holiday Easter break. We decided to book for Sunday lunch. We were seated by the window and then promptly forgotten about. 15 minutes later I decided to get my own drinks and was met by a member of the waiting team. He apologised and said the manager was having an off day. It was he who seated us !!! Drink arrived and food orders taken. We ordered a bottle of Malbec ( the only one they had and was Ok). Wine had not arrived after 25 minutes so enquired as to where it was. Meals arrived at the same time as the wine. Again the same gentleman blamed the manager whoever he or she was but again it was him who took the wine order!! There was a frantic clearing space for the accompanying cauliflower cheese. We asked what the vegetables were which came with the Roast and both swede mash and broccoli not to our liking, so additional parsnips were provided. Anyway in the scramble to make room on the table, the waiter removed one wine glass. Now left with a bottle of wine and just one glass between two. Additionally we had to ask for a serving utensil for the shared cauliflower cheese. These basic issues are something which shouldn’t really need to be experienced. So to the meals. The Pork which my wife ordered was ok. My lamb was fatty and very chewy and not great at all. The potatoes had NO taste and no seasoning and the gravy was just like coloured water and no taste!! I can see previous reviews are positive so maybe we were just extremely unlucky with food quality and poor service but based on our experience I wouldn’t bother. There are far better places I’m sure !!

Do not get room 20 This room forms part of the hotels fire escape. The emergency green lights are on all night keeping the room to illuminated to sleep. The bathroom was below basic. Shower hose leaked so badly the water pressure was minimal at the head The towel rail was repaired by me so we could hang the towels up. At breakfast we were sat by an open window and on the sunny morning this was very nice. Tea and coffee with toast brought to the table quite quickly. Over 30mins later Steve had to remind his staff we still hadn't had breakfast. The Full English breakfast was very tasty when it finally arrived. Overall a disappointing stay.
