Sorry, this will be a long one! It had been my dream to stay in an over water villa in the Maldives - unfortunately when I booked a Sri Lanka and Maldives trip with Trip a Deal, they had all sold out, so I got a room by the beach. However, this ended up being a bonus - as follows; The over water villas look fabulous, but have 2 apartments in each and not much privacy between the two, according to one of my group who stayed in one. They are also situated at the opposite end of the island to the restaurant and main bar - so a long, hot walk away. But I reckon still worth it for the experience! My beach room was really good - air con, lovely big bathroom with both overhead shower and standard detachable head shower. Only a 10 metre walk to the beautiful, blue (warm!) sea and a short snorkel to the drop off, with plenty of fish, reef sharks and the occasional turtle (the coral is a bit disappointing, but is recovering). My only complaint with the room was the bed was really firm, which is not great for me. I still had a bit of a walk to the restaurant and bar (I had room 141 - the 2 storey bungalow rooms are numbered clockwise in a circle round the perimeter of the island, starting at 01, ending with 50, so early and late numbers are nearest to the facilities). I had to pay an extra $20 USD/night for an 'upgrade' to a ground floor room. When we arrived in Male, we had to stand around for almost an hour in the sweltering heat waiting for the shuttle to the island (40 min boat ride). On checkout at 12, we had a 5 hour wait before we were taken back to the mainland (late flight), no option of late checkouts (fully booked with new arrivals), which would have been $62 USD for 3 hours! There is really nowhere cool to sit and wait, and really it's too inconvenient to swim and get changed in the small and hot shower/change room, so some sort of air - conned facility would be great, perhaps they could enclose the built in area of the main bar? The food is amazing and the staff are fantastic (remember to take some $USD for tips). One thing to note: the resort operates in $USD and if you want to use cash, make sure you have new issue notes with no flaws (small tears or writing on them) - they won't accept flawed notes (same in Cambodia by the way!). I loved my stay, despite the few little negatives - can't compare it to other Maldives resorts, but I'm sure Adaaran Ranalhi stacks up favourably.
