My friend and I had absolutely no idea what to expect when we got there. "Potenza?" our travel agent asked, more than once. "Why are you going there?" But Potenza was the main reason for our trip to Italy. My friend's grandfather and great-grandparents had emigrated from there in the early 20th century. She had to see it, and I was happy to come along. We flew to Naples and hired a driver to take us into Potenza. When he pulled up to La Primula Hotel, what we found completely exceeded our expectations. The hotel, the property and, most important, the Lioi family who owns it were absolutely lovely. My friend could not have received a warmer welcome back to Italy! The photos on the hotel's website simply do not do this hotel justice. The grounds are beautiful, good for strolling or peaceful relaxation. The pool is beautifully designed. Our room was spacious and beautifully decorated. It had a queen bed plus a twin. At the front desk, they serve a tisane, an herbal tea made from the flowers of a tree that grows on the property. The onsite restaurant is also run by the multi-talented Lioi family. We had both lunch and dinner there. Between those meals, I think we probably tried everything on the menu, and it was delicious. I even tried the wild boar. I liked it. The service was friendly and attentive. We'd written in advance about the possibility of arranging a private tour of Potenza. Mr. Lioi arranged for us to meet with Dr. Katia Lacerra from the Basilicata tourism bureau. She picked us up, and gave excellent tour about the town's history, starting with the Roman bridge that still stands on the edge of town. Potenza, which means "Strength," and this town provided key Roman defense for the region. She took us through 2,000 years of history. My friend had the wonderful experience of re-tracing her ancestors' footsteps. Yet Potenza remains a vibrant town where families continue to live and work. Here we were welcomed with genuine hospitality, which set the tone for the entire trip. On your next visit to Italy, consider venturing off the beaten path and take a side trip to Potenza. Stay with the family at La Primula Hotel. You'll be glad you did.
