Holiday Inn Portsmouth Downtown

We knew as we made our reservation that the hotel was being completely remodeled. They even called me to tell me the elevator would not be working during our stay. I applaud them for their customer service attitude. What I CANNOT applaud them for are their efforts in remodeled room configurations. 1. The walls between rooms are paper thin which allows conversations from next room to be heard. A group(at least four) of young men in next room were partying until 11:45 pm where their cursing and loud conversations kept us awake. 2. The remodeled configuration does not include a hanging closet. There are two “coat hooks” on a wall which I guess you are supposed to hang items on. You “might” be able to hang two hangers on each wall hook. I agree long closets are not necessary but a small open closet with room to hang six or so items is not a luxury that can be eliminated. 3. The bathroom has been reduced in size to where standing in the tub/shower I can touch the facing wall. The commode is a mini size and is low in height. The toilet paper holder is so close to the commode that it is difficult to sit on the commode!!! 4. Finally. The rack room price was NOT justified by the facility. Even after the completion of remodeling. I must say the room was very clean, the staff were friendly and there is ample free parking. Another couple in our party indicated they had stayed the previous week in a remodeled Holiday Inn in Buffalo and the room was exactly like ours (including pictures on the wall) with the exception it had a small open closet. Judging by that this must be a new Holiday Inn “standard” configuration. Someone at corporate that set this “standard”must realize the needs of travelers, not just the financial impact.

Staff always greeted us as we came in and they were very helpful. The lobby area was nice with free coffee/ tea/ water. The pool area was nice as well. Our room was very comfortable and clean. The hotel was very conveniently located for walking around the downtown area. They have a restaurant on site, so there's no complimentary breakfast, but the hotel is within walking distance of a number of good breakfast spots. The only downside was that there was some dust and noise from renovations, but that's just a temporary thing.

Good place to stay in downtown Portsmouth. Within walking distance of the river, floodwall murals, restaurants, Portsmouth Brewing. Room was comfortable and quiet. Lots of cable channels, a Keurig coffeemaker, fridge and microwave. There's coffee in the lobby 24/7, and free USA Today. The fitness center is near the pool and has a couple cardio machines, free weights, a bosu ball and balance ball. There's and onsite restaurant/bar that serves breakfast.

Came here to visit my cousin at Shawnee, hotel staff was very friendly and helpful! I booked the wrong room type and they where able to accomodate me with a smile on their face. Very good service, housekeepers did a phenomenal job keeping my room tidy and managment was very kind.

Hotel’s restaurant and bar were closed even though website showed they were open which is why we booked this hotel. It definitely isn’t the Ramada from my younger years. Probably five cars in the parking lot and they put us on the 5th floor. Floor in hallway hadn’t been swept. Person handling check ins had no personality. We ended up having to go to the Portsmouth Brewing Company for food and drinks. Having been platinum elite IHG reward members for many years and having stayed at IHG hotels all over the year, this hotel definitely deserves a 1/5 rating. We would have given it a 0/5 if that had been an option

First, most of the hotel staff was STELLAR. Courteous, helpful, efficient. My server in the bar was fabulous. The pool area is gorgeous and welcoming - much more than the pool. This property is an older property. It has been refurbished and refreshed, but the rooms are essentially as they were when built. As a woman traveling alone, I look for safety. While the rooms are all interior, the doors do not open directly on the hallway. Each room opens into an alcove. Rooms are paired. While this makes it nice to not be standing in the hall while unlocking the door, each alcove is a hiding place. The hotel has a side entrance that comes into the front desk. It is not locked, though. Anyone can walk in, and if the front desk clerks aren’t at the front of their space, a person can walk right on through. Inside the room I found a stained sofa, a table with sticky stains, and rings on the bedside table. The bathroom/toilet area is small. The door barely misses the toilet to open and close. The shower curtain is ragged and not big enough to cover the space of the rod… by at least six inches. Be sure to turn the bathroom light on before you go in and close the door… The blackout blinds, however, are awesome. Dark as pitch!

I was called Feb 27h by my sister in regards to my brother being shot twice in the back of the head. I live in Tennessee and packed bags and headed out next day. My brain was going 100 mph and never thought about getting a room. Made a phone call to my boss to help me get a room and she made calls and then called this hotel. With .e being an ihg member this worked out perfect and the jail was right directly across the street and that's where they took the man that placed 911 call and was arrested. Room was very nice and clean. Front desk was on point as well as housekeepers and the rest of the staff. Only had 1 issue and that was night audit didn't stand when I approached him and he did not have coffee hot and ready. Returning for the trial and hope to see the same smile faces to greet me. Definitely recommend this hotel.

We had to stay several nights due to a business trip. Hotel was easy to find. Lobby was nice looking, offering coffee and water. There is a restaurant on site that had good reviews but we didn't dine there. We were on the 5th floor. The elevator and hallways are like old bones. The room was on the end by the elevator and was quiet. The beds were really comfy and the pillows were nicer than the Hiltons. There was a fridge, Microwave, and coffee in the room. I loved the granite in the shower and the Dove shampoo and conditioner. Overall it was a pretty nice stay, especially since Portsmouth tends to be a little more of a ran down town. There was a gentleman who checked us in, he seemed new. It would go a long way if he smiled or was a little more personable. He wasn't rude just not customer oriented.

I love this hotel. Gave it a 4 out of 5 only because it’s a little worn. But the rooms are large and perfectly adequate, the staff is friendly, and the indoor pool area is great. It’s full of beautiful plants and is super relaxing. The best restaurant in town is inside the hotel, and there’s a friendly bar area.
