I have practiced yoga alone in my living room for a long time, but this was my first yoga retreat. When my body decided that a trek was not in the cards for me, green hills found a space for my mother and I to join them a day after I called, which required making arrangements with the lovely hotel next door to host us. The program consisted of morning yeti bowl nasal cleansing (something I was quite skeptical of and enjoyed immensely), a gentle morning yoga practice, 3 delicious and healthy vegetarian meals, an afternoon sound healing session, a more challenging evening yoga session, a nighttime meditation (or mantra chanting and dancing) and optional additional services, such as hikes and massages (for a little extra on the massages). I live as far as humanly possible from Nepal, but it is still cheaper to fly there for this experience than it would be to do something similar at home. I had never experienced sound healing before and absolutely fell in love with it. The yogis were all deeply spiritual and completely non judgemental people who were a delight to learn from. The down to earth, diverse collection of other travelers from all over the world became an instant family. My mother and I soaked up the calm, healing environment. I recovered from my illness there faster than I thought possible and left with a renewed desire to expand my personal yoga practice beyond a physical fitness challenge to incorporate my own sense of spirituality, to reach out to establish connections with other yoga practitioners in my community, and to learn how to play the singing bowls to bring the beautiful benefits of sound healing to my family. All in all it was a transformative experience for me and one I am deeply grateful for. There is not a single thing I would change about the experience and I certainly hope to return someday, preferably to share this treasure with some of my other loved ones that could benefit from it as well.
