North Devon resort

"Our stay at North Devon Resort was unfortunately very disappointing. The only real positive was the lovely lady working behind the bar on our first evening. She was incredibly friendly, welcoming and genuinely helpful, and was one of the few bright spots during our stay. Unfortunately, almost everything else fell short. Check-in got us off to a poor start. We queued for quite a while despite there being several guests arriving, with only one person on reception. We had booked half board, but this wasn't mentioned during check-in at all. It was only because I asked about food before leaving reception that the receptionist realised he'd forgotten to give us the correct wristbands. Had I not asked, we could easily have been charged again for meals we'd already paid for. The studio apartment itself was not clean. There was dirt and hair on the floor, grit on the pillows and duvet, dirty windows, marks all over the walls, and even what looked like a blood stain on the ceiling. It certainly didn't feel like the room had been cleaned to an acceptable standard before our arrival. A few days into our stay, we witnessed something that explained the grit on the bedding. Two members of the housekeeping team were cleaning nearby rooms. One carried what appeared to be clean bed pillows, then, upon seeing us coming up the stairs, simply dumped them onto the dirty ground outside before walking into one of the rooms. Whether they were clean or awaiting washing, that is completely unacceptable and unhygienic. The external stairs leading to our accommodation also felt unsafe. Every step creaked loudly, and there were several areas where it genuinely felt as though the wood could give way. We found ourselves only stepping where the support beams were underneath because we didn't trust the condition of the stairs. The biggest disappointment was the restaurant. We had paid extra for half board, with breakfast included every morning. Every piece of information we were given stated breakfast was served until 11:30am. We were seated by 11:00am, but there were no signs explaining whether to order at the table or at the counter. A member of staff repeatedly ignored my attempts to get her attention while serving another table. Eventually I went to the kitchen to ask, only to be told that breakfast had finished early so they could prepare for the afternoon carvery. By then it was only around 11:10am. When I explained we'd paid for half board, the only suggestion was directions to the local Wetherspoons so we could pay for breakfast elsewhere, or wait 45 minutes for a carvery instead. There was no apology or attempt to provide the breakfast we'd already paid for. Although the evening meal on our first night was perfectly nice, this experience left such a poor impression that we didn't return to the restaurant for the rest of our stay. Kentisbury Grange

"I’ve been fortunate enough to be well travelled and stayed in hundreds of hotels but this one is one of the best. The little details make this place so special. The accommodation was of exceptional quality with a massive bathroom, the room was spacious but so cosy I was asleep by 9.30! The food was delicious, the quality was outstanding and so lovely to see the chef taking real pride in what he does. The service was amazing, the waitresses and management were so accommodating and went above and beyond for us. This is the best value for a hotel, we hope to be back v soon!!"

Croyde Bay Hotel or Self Catering

"Brilliant location near beach. Aimed mainly at families, evening entertainment typical holiday camp for young children or oaps. Very good service and well maintained facilities. Excellent breakfast, clean rooms and fun games onsite like crazy golf. I had party of 3 adults staying in the hotel side. Best value in the area for a room with 3 or 4 adults. Highly recommend for a trip to North Devon"

"Only stayed 1 night nice clean room plenty of tea coffee and sugar in your room very dog friendly breakfast was superb lovely bowl of fresh fruit and delicious full English would definitely return . it was easy find and a small walk from harbour"

"I was playing golf at Saunton golf club and stayed here for 2 nights - the staff were very welcoming and friendly. Lovely rooms , cleaned after the first night , lovely bathroom and comfortable bed Breakfast was included and was great Would fully recommend staying here 5 stars !"

The Captain's House

"Wish we had read the reviews before visiting! We thought it was a lovely setting and was surprised there wasn’t more people there, but we would try the cream tea. £16 for 2 tiny scones each, a small bowl of cream to share and the same of cheap jam ( we couldn’t work out what jam it was meant to be) like other people have mentioned there is no toilets as “it is a guest house “ as we were told and he wanted payment asap. Shame, but we won’t be back."
