Context: Stated one night during the last leg of our Tanzania safari journey, having traversed Tarangire, Serengeti and finally Ngorogoro. June 2025. The positives: amazing views of the Ngorogoro crater. Brilliant architecture of the hotel lobby and common areas - the view as one enters the lobby is breathtaking (the Ngorogoro crater views from the lobby and the rooms are breathtaking). A proper luxury resort style establishment on the crater rim. Spa, gym and other amenities typically uncommon in other resorts / camps / lodges in the Ngorogoro conservation/ Serengeti park areas. Great bar menu with a solid selection of cocktails. The could do betters: among all the places we visited (including seemingly non luxury stays), the staff at the Melia Ngorogoro was the least warm and hospitable. The room size is best compared to a small sized European budget hotel room. A number of basic issues such as the minibar fridge not working on check in, fully sealed room with no air conditioning (which we were informed later and provided a fan and windows opened), dinner service (while boasting a set 4 course menu) involving starters that seemed cold, plates that seemed relatively unclean (by luxury hotel standards) and service that seemed more hurried than personal. Overall: while the Melia Ngorogoro boasts of its architecture and spectacular views, a lot is left longing in terms of the overall service quality, rooms.
