The Briers

I feel so bad saying this as the people at the B&B were so lovely but honestly it’s horrendous I’m absolutely baffled by the good recommendations - were we staying in a different place? We actually moved rooms due to the matress being so bad in room 7….to get to another room with also a terrible matress, curtains that won’t close so light pours in in the morning, bath that leaks during the night, blinds broken, tap in the sink wobbly and broken. Used the ironing board which you guessed… broken!! The breakfast was horrendous… it’s a B&B with no cooked options not even able to pay extra (we did know this before we went) but the options for breakfast were soo poor I.e packet pains au chocolates. We didn’t have our room cleaned but I understand this is a B&B so that’s not always the case. The whole place needs a massive refurb I honestly believe for the money I paid I was absolutely ripped off. If it wasn’t for the location I’d probably have tried to get some money back. Honestly if you are looking for a good night sleep please save your back and look somewhere else :(

Staff very friendly from the owner Darren to the cleaner and kitchen staff. Location just over a mile from the town centre. Room clean and tidy . Breakfast had great variety for jus being continental.

Enjoyed my stay. Comfy beds. Lovely Mountain View. Good selection for breakfast. Horses in neighbouring field which was nice.

Lovely quiet location, overlooked by nothing other than the mountains. Only a few minutes from town centre. Lovely room, pleasant staff, and adequate breakfast. Will definitely be back. Looking forward to seeing this property's plans for extension hopefully next year.

In October 2024 my wife and I decided to book into a church conference that was being held in Newcastle in June 2025. As a couple of seniors we wanted to be close to the conference venue. Before booking the conference we checked with ********** for nearby accommodation. The Briers Country House ticked all the boxes. The website details sounded amazing and the reviews of the Briers Country House were impressive. So in October 2024 we booked a double room for June 2025.. We completed an online registration form and our booking was confirmed . All great or so we thought! Fast forward to June 2025 with ten days to go before the conference and we got notification that our booking at the Briers Country Hose was cancelled. ~ It seemed unbelievable and so we telephoned the Briers. We assume that it was the owner/manager Darren who answered our call. He said that the hotel was closed and then that it was fully booked - All rather confusing! Regretfully he was neither courteous nor apologetic and hung up in the midst of our query. A simple, good mannered explanation would have made all the difference. At such short notice we were left high and dry knowing that there was no accommodation in the area. Thankfully ********** came to our rescue and got us the only accommodation available in the area at the Five Star Slieve Donard Hotel at no extra cost. Unlike Darren or whoever we talked with at the Briers Hotel the personnel at ********** were courteous, helpful, efficient and good mannered, As someone who has invested time and energy over my career in encouraging local businesses, it is extremely disappointing when one encounters such dreadful service. The moral of this story is to book through ********** so that in the unlikely event of such bad service there is recompense.

Very friendly staff, clean and comfortable bedrooms, the B&B had all you can ask for. Oh, and excellent coffee!
