With a great location and old world charm and based on an earlier family holiday at Mt.Lavinia I chose this place again on a college reunion outing with 3 others recently. After a long day of sight seeing we had a late check in and were looking forward to a hot bath and a relaxed evening at the restaurant. We were in for a shock when we were shown to our rooms on the 5th floor...one room was in no state to be occupied with a whole lot of bed linen piled on the bed, damp patches on the walls, no amenities whatsoever (no phone, no safe, no fridge , no TV, no toiletries, no dustbin). The other was no better except that the bed was made and the damp patches had been scraped and had a fresh coat of paint which made the smell unbearable. The front desk was totally inefficient saying the hotel was full up. We got the manager out and after a heated argument he 'managed' to find two rooms on the ground floor which entailed a long walk through dimly lit winding corridors. As one in the group had a mobility issue we rejected the rooms. Another room was found next to the ones on the 5th floor...but again without amenities. The carpet was faded in patches, the overhead lighting panel over the wash basin was missing its cover so all the wires were hanging loose, no safety latch, stained chairs....by this time we were exhausted and we had an early start the next morning to catch the 5:55 am train to Kandy for a day trip so we settled for the new room and the preallotted room smelling of paint and went to bed tired and hungry. After another long day we returned to the hotel and refused to go back to the same rooms. The manager again insisted they were full up and said he would change our rooms the next night which was no big deal as we were scheduled to check out the following morning. After creating a scene in the lounge we asked for a refund so we could check in to some other hotel ( we had even earmarked two hotels to move to) the manager (Mr. Dominick was his name I think) "found" two other rooms just a few rooms away from the ones we had spent the night in! But again no phone in one, one bedside lamp each in the two rooms, plug points not working, one shower not working (we made sure to check that everything was working), no safety latches on the front door. Of course there was a flurry of activity then...plumber, electrician, housekeeping...we even got bedroom slippers, face tissues, hand towels, dustbins....everything except TVs (which had gone for repair we were told though our neighbor's TV was blaring...Wow! And to think these are all standard amenities in any basic room of any standard hotel these days. Yes Mt. Lavinia is a very old hotel and run down but we cannot understand how and why a hotel of its repute would keep rooms in a state of disrepair open for allotment to guests, and then very grudgingly (our travel agent too had been in touch with the manager) open up other rooms all the while insisting the 200 room hotel was full!!! And most sur
