Fitzroy Inn Historic Retreat Mittagong

We traveled down last weekend with a group of 9 couples for a 1920s-themed ****** mystery night, and it was an absolute blast! John, Helen and Jill were incredibly accommodating and the catering was delicious. The inn’s charming character (and gaol cell) added so much to the suspense and overall atmosphere. Every room was spotless, and the beds were exceptionally comfortable. Thanks again for an unforgettable experience!

A beautiful place to stay. Our room was huge and bed most comfortable. John is a gracious host and we enjoyed the history walk around the buildings. The Fitzroy Inn is a welcome retreat and worth staying for a few days. Nice breakfast and coffee. Enjoyed a takeaway pizza on the verandah with a bottle of wine for supper. Perfect! Highly recommended.

Our room was excellent, in a separate building to the Inn but very close to go across for breakfast.Breakfast which was a European continental-cereal and juice,two hard boiled eggs, proscuito and yoghurt. Fruit would have been nice. Service not great, we were the only guests mid week so the Inn was closed up by nightfall and deserted and the restaurant not open weeknights. The owners seemed busy planning events and didn't give us much info, however the lady who served breakfast was very nice and helpful and gave us a very interesting tour of the building. We enjoyed our stay for the peace and quiet ( although the noise from a wooden car bridge and trains nearby are clearly heard).Good base to explore Mittagong, Bowral area, lookouts, walks etc. Inn has tennis court and lovely gardens to explore.

Luxury Escapes two night stay We upgraded to a premium room ($20 per night). Aging building and creaky floors but is was a large room and comfortable bed. The Bathroom was aged but functional with nice 'rainforest shower - no bath! WiFi did not work in our room and mobile internet via Vodafone not great anywhere in the hotel - okay in downtown Mittagong. Wrap around Verandah was a great place to sip wine and relax - except when the trains passed! Speaking of which it must be noted that the goods trains were very noisy both in our room and on the property, passing only 50 meters from the property. Unfortunately these were frequent throughout the night and did affect sleep - not the hotels fault but also not on the advertising! Pleasant & helpful staff. 1920oos

Reading many of the reviews I feel I set my expectations too high but the bottom line is, I suppose, I wouldn't stay here again. It never occurred to me we would end up with a "cosy" loft room, No. 5. The climb up the three steep flights of stairs was too much for my husband's sore back and, in the end, we went home early only having stayed two out of our three paid nights. This room is suited to people who: - enjoy the sound of trains going past, at ALL times, and the clunk clunk as cars drive over the bridge - are not tall or have good spatial awareness - have good balance while showering in the bathtub - like sitting as close to the door as possible to ensure wifi access to the office downstairs - appreciate the quietness of no phone in the room, even to contact reception The restaurant Breakfast - we arrived 10 minutes after it's stated opening time - one pastry left and only teabags and instant coffee on offer. Dinner - fireplace and pianist were nice but the pricing was what we expect to pay in Sydney city. (Beetroot & Basil Pesto Risotto $32!!) The one shining light of the establishment was James in the restaurant.

The Fitzroy Inn is a beautiful historic homestead in gorgeous gardens with some fabulous restaurants, cafes and antique shops a few moments away in Mittagong town centre. (Do try Paste on Main Street.) Our room was lovely, the shower good and staff lovely. Continental breakfast turned out to be a bit hit and miss due to torrential rain the day before we arrived but it meant we discovered the award winning Gumnut bakery (almond croissant to die for). We would happily have stayed longer and will come again.
