I had high hopes. I've stayed in many Memphis hotels and had always wanted to stay at what is the self-proclaimed South's Grand Hotel. The lobby itself is very grand, if not very busy. Check in was fast but lacked any sort of friendliness -it was all business. But that was OK with me as it was efficient and it was late. Our standard 2 double room was larger than I expected and nicely appointed. BUT, the bathroom was the smallest, non functional bathroom I have ever seen. Think cruise ship bathroom but half the size. The toilet is literally in the middle of the room away from the wall. There is no storage space to even put down your vanity stuff. So if you are staying here and planning to get ready for a wedding, meeting, event, etc know that it is impossible in this space. There was a small make up area outside the bathroom, but because the bathroom door opens out it was cumbersome. The lobby duck show at 11 and 5 daily is unique. However, as a hotel guest it is an inconvenience. The lobby fills with hotel and non hotel guests alike. They close one of the elevators and rope off areas. So, if you are a hotel guest who is on a tight schedule, know that around 11 and 5 daily, and for some time before and after, it will be hard to get an elevator or even get to the elevators or exits, etc. Its not just occasionally, its daily. Again, the show itself is cute, but they should rope off the side of the lobby near the guest elevators for hotel guests only so that we can get to and from our business quickly. There is a nonsense hotel "service" fee. They say it includes coffee in the deli in the morning. Nice perk in theory. But they can not keep up with the demand and the coffee pot was constantly empty. There was no tea or hot cocoa as we were told at check in, and the one staff behind the counter was so overwhelmed we didn't even bother. And this was not just one day, it was for all three days of our stay. This bogus fee also includes access to the gym which we did not use, and access to PressReader, which I already have and some bottled water and internet. All stuff that should be included anyway. I dont want to minimize how "grand" the hotel feels, not only the lobby but the guest rooms, hallways etc. Daily housekeeping and evening turndown add to the regal feel. It all gives a very classy vibe. Its a shame that there are some negatives here.
