Great National Hotel Ballina

This is a nice hotel with a good sized swimming pool

We stayed for 4 nights. The staff were pleasant. The food was good. The room we got was spacious for the 4 of us. Nice high ceilings, but the furniture was very dated and uncomfortable. I found the bed uncomfortable to sleep in and the chairs were just wood with no cushion at all on them, so it wasn't a room you could relax in. The tv was a JOKE, what can only be described as one of the very first flat screens on the market. Tiny screen and only 4 channels to choose from. It was ridiculous in this day and age.

Disappointing trip to Ballina. Our first. Spent a Bank Holiday here and expected more. Arrived Saturday. Room was fine except for a constant loud buzzing sound from a fuse box. I had to manufacture earplugs from tissue paper to drown out the noise. Reported the issue to reception first thing next day and no problem, we were relocated later that day. Saturday evening, our first day, we arrived down to the bar/restaurant for a meal. Christening party in main restaurant so we made do with bar. Got menus and really liked the options available. However, it was realised we were on the weekend deal with a main course option. So main menu was replaced with a much limited free main course option. We persisted and had an adequate experience. No problem we reckoned we could go for the Crab etc.. when we dined there on Sunday. Leisure centre very Disappointing. Centre cold, water also cold. Ambiance zero. Nothing like photos on website. Warmed up in steam room before leaving. Overall experience poor. Staff very good. Sunday, spent the afternoon watching the football. Had been out and about for the morning but as M recovering from surgery she elected to stay in the room. I watched the footy in the bar. Tiny TV with everyone struggling to enjoy the experience. M arrives down at 6ish and I ask for a table for 2 for a main course. M still on crutches and tired not needing much, but wanted something quick and head back to room early. Eva Braun informs us NO availability until 8.15... despite the restaurant being empty.. I explained we are guests, would be approx. 60 minutes having a main... was told with no uncertainty that there was no availability.. the restaurant or the bar.. was told I could have service in reception.. *** Extraordinary Never had this kind of response in 40+ years Rang the Poacher. Restaurant they offered us a table at 7. Booked a taxi. Had an amazing meal. Got taxi home. Back in room at 9. We had a lovely evening in the Poacher. No thanks to Fraulein Braun...

Found myself unexpectedly in Ballina on Thursday evening. My first port of call was the Great National because I have stayed there on previous occasions Very comfortable room, Excellent breakfast, good rate,actually great value, and above all, FANTASTIC STAFF !

Sehr schöne Zimmer und ruhig gelegen. Um in das Zentrum zu gelangen braucht man ein Auto.

Had a lovely two night stay during the salmon festival.

We stayed for 4 nights in a deluxe family room as we were attending friends wedding at the hotel. The room was huge and lovely, the food was amazing! The pool, steam room & sauna were fab extras. All the staff were really lovely , so friendly and totally went out of there way to make our stay just perfect! The wedding was amazing too , in fact we think it was the best wedding we had attended. My 3 year old granddaughter did not want to leave! Really great value for a really comfortable stay, comfy beds, great food & amazing staff! Thank you!

Pool in leisure centre is so cold had a 6 month old baby at it, my baby starting crying the second he hit the water staff said water couldnt be heated past 28 degrees which I would argue was even colder than that...been a member for years and there has been 'problems' with the heating for a while now but every time I land back its colder then the previous time. Had to leave the pool with my baby within 2 minutes of getting in he was just frozen its a shame because it was always a lovely pool before this.
