Castle and Ball by Greene King Inns

No coffee at 6/7am. Bar dead at 10.30 (weekday). No phone charging in bedroom facility - had to raid lost property. Only functional, no frills.

Lovely room comfy bed and pillows staff all friendly Sunday roast was amazing Happy wife happy life 😊 breakfast was awesome with a good range and quality produce Would recommend this hotel and can’t understand people that don’t rate this place with a low rating well done guys amazing amazing Very happy both of us And finally to add parking was perfect 👍

Everything up until my arrival was excellent, including sending me an email re noise and different parking arrangements because of a fair in the High Street. Check in was smooth and easy and because of the age of the hotel you can expect quirkiness, including noisy floorboards, steps and things not always being level. The bedroom was OK but unfortunately the bathroom was old and tired with mould on the tiles and a filthy shower curtain. It was in such a state I choose not to shower. The dinner in the hotel was typical pub grub and we certainly would have gone out into town for dinner had we not been so tired. Breakfast was very good, but be warned when they said breakfast is served until 10am it means everything is removed at 10.01.

We love to visit Marlborough, we decided to eat in the Castle a Ball (Saturday Lunchtime) on our last visit and left feeling very disappointed! We chose our meals and ordered at the bar and yes it’s a good price!! Our food was delivered by a pleasant young man with the dirtiest of unpressed trousers and stained shirt! My Scampi and chips looked lost on a big plate, the scampi was over cooked and bland and I counted the 13 chips! The mushy peas were less than a desert spoonful. My partners Hunters chicken was ridiculously small and over cooked, the chicken and bacon were both hard (maybe too long in the microwave) and again a major shortage of chips! Another equally unkept scruffy young man came over to the table and took away our plates, very clear to see that nearly all the scampi and all the Hunters Chicken had been left asked if we enjoyed our meal but left as we attempted to explain how disappointed we were without commenting back! We sat there thinking that someone from the management will come and speak but they didn’t so we just got up and left! We certainly wouldn’t go back again for the food! The hotel looks beautiful and is in a great position, it has lots of parking and I’m guessing it would be a good place to stay!

Lovely hotel right in the centre of a beautiful town, staff very welcoming and friendly. Had a problem with my room the first night I stayed and they moved me to another room without me even having to ask. Most impressed and would definitely stay there again.

We stayed at this Hotel to break up a trip to the Midlands and hadn't visited Marlborough before, although I had driven through about 20 years ago for work and thought it was an impressive High Street. It is still a very impressive main street and this hotel is right in the centre of it. It's an old coaching Inn, so drooping in places, but our room was full of wooden beams and atmosphere. The furniture was a bit worn and tired but that only added to the effect. It was all very spacious and the bathroom was well appointed. The bed was a good size and comfortable, if a little on the firm side. The staff were very friendly and efficient and the location very good, especially with a large, easily accessible and free car park. Dinner in the hotel was a bit of a disappointment, for me anyway, a huge but not particularly tasty steak and ale pie and lumpy gravy. We were given a voucher which gave us 20% off the bill, which was handy and my wife's steak was good, she said. Despite facing the main street and being above the bar, the room was very quiet. Breakfast was a world apart from my underwhelming dinner the night before. Plenty of choice of cereals and pastries, lovely teas and coffee and the Full English Breakfast was one of the best I've ever had. Cooked to order, with butcher's quality pork sausages, perfectly cooked, lovely poached egg on sourdough toast, very good smoked bacon, mushrooms and tomato and beans. To sum up, it's an old hotel, car parking is great, location is perfect, staff were lovely, the room was huge and comfortable and the breakfast was amazingly good. We'd certainly return when we are up that way.

Great location and excellent staff. Room was very pleasant but creaky floorboards above us and the beer delivery men woke us very early! Breakfast good quality but tea and coffee very basic (don’t like hot water dispensers in a thermos jug!) Comfortable bed but no heating on - actually slept in my clothes as it was so cold! Lots of hot water for a bath but bathroom decor in poor repair.

Just a two night short break here at the Castle and Ball. Very welcoming staff from reception to the restaurant, all were friendly. Our room was on the second floor. As we hadn't been before we didn't know how many stairs there are. If, like us you are older and unfit ask for a ground floor room when booking or take oxygen with you! Food was all good, breakfast had a good selection and dinner the same. One small criticism, the communal areas ie stairs cound do with a good clean. Doesn't affect the stay though.

Just had a Sunday lunch, it was advertised with Rosemary and Garlic roast potatoes and literally they had opened a bag of frozen roast potatoes and put them on the plate. The pork had no flavour whatsoever and I'm sure the broccoli was also frozen. When you are paying £16 for a dinner you don't expect to have frozen food, totally unacceptable. When I complained they just shrugged their shoulders, not interested at all.
