We were a group of 6 girls staying in 3 rooms at Summer Villa Guest House in Maafushi Island. While the room rates were quite reasonable, unfortunately, several aspects of our stay were disappointing — especially in terms of hospitality and guest handling. On our first day, we were informed that the buffet breakfast (which was included in our booking) would not be served. Instead, we were offered English breakfast plates per person, which was acceptable at first. However, things got worse on the third day. When we went for breakfast between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM (breakfast is supposed to be served until 10:00 AM), we found that several items were already finished. We politely requested a refill from a Nepalese staff member, but to our shock, he misbehaved and raised his voice. The food was refilled after 30 minutes, by which time we had no time left to eat and had to leave. The staff said to us, “You’re not even taking the food, why are you asking for refills?” This kind of behavior towards guests is unacceptable, especially when we had very limited time to eat as we were scheduled to catch our speedboat to Malé for our flight. The miscommunication, delay, and rudeness left us extremely frustrated on our final morning. Things escalated further when we checked out. Our luggage was loaded into a separate buggy to be taken to the jetty. However, once we reached the jetty, the hotel staff did not properly hand over the luggage to the speedboat crew. As a result, when we arrived in Malé, we discovered that our luggage was missing. This triggered a stressful 45-minute panic, with multiple calls and back-and-forth communication between the hotel, speedboat operators, and jetty staff in both Maafushi and Malé. We had just 2 to 2.5 hours left before our international flight, and this situation put us under enormous pressure. Thankfully, our luggage was eventually sent on the next speedboat, and we managed to collect it just in time and rushed to the airport immigration. Final Thoughts: The lack of professionalism, poor communication, mismanagement of luggage, and the inappropriate behavior of staff turned what should have been a relaxing vacation into a stressful and unpleasant experience on our last day. The hotel seriously needs to train their staff in guest hospitality and proper coordination for speedboat luggage transfers. We hope they take these points seriously for the comfort and safety of future guests.
