The Valley of Rocks Hotel

We overnighted at the Valley of Rocks Hotel during a walking trip and were thankful for a comfortable, restful respite from the trail. Our room was large, with windows facing the coastline. Everything was clean and in good condition; the bathroom was spacious and squeaky clean. The breakfast was generous and tasty. Two things make the VRH special, however. First, the property itself is a wonderful old Victorian building that still conveys the “good life” of a century or more ago. Second is the friendly and helpful staff who greeted us warmly and pointed us to good dining in the Lynton-Lynmouth area. Should our wanderings bring us back to Lynton/Lynmouth, we will definitely stay here again.

The staff were horrendous, a member of staff was creeping around my girlfriend and wouldn’t leave her alone. I told her to tell him to stop with a rude word. Then another member of staff called Eddie pulled me aside to ask who I called that. I refused to comment and he kicked me out and as he did he threatened to beat me up. Without the support of the manager he would have done it.

Good customer service, spacious room we stayed in a superior room but most of the room is just empty spaces was still only a standard sized double bed and small shower cubicle. Decor could also do with being updated. For the price can’t fault the room.would recommend rebooking the car parking as very small not many spaces.

We really liked this hotel and it was excellent value for money. Reception staff were very welcoming and we were given a good sized twin room. Yes, the decor is tired but it was clean with a good smart TV. Our biggest frustration was the fluctuating shower temperature but we worked out a strategy to have a good, powerful shower. Buffet breakfast was good value with a wide selection of hot and cold offerings. Great hotel to stay at if you are on a budget.

Room was very basic - no style or character. Bar was permanently closed and the breakfast options were limited to chicken sausages and Turkey rashers - No black pudding or any pork options at all which was most unexpected as not mentioned before booking or on hotel website! We were advised it was now a budget hotel on arrival which we were not aware of prior as we just thought it was more reasonable being out of season. We would not have booked this is we had been aware of their budget status as it was clearly a more stately hotel not too long ago!

How you feel about this hotel will likely depend upon how much you paid. We paid £80 for a night and it wasn’t worth that much. I would say if you paid £60 for a night, you might be pretty happy. Any more than £80 and you would be incredibly disappointed. The building is beautiful and you can see how magnificent it once was. However inside it is incredibly tired and despite the magnificent efforts of a couple of helpful reception staff, it’s poorly run. There’s no bar, no restaurant and no housekeeping during your stay. Breakfast is available, but pork products are not available, with alternate meat products such as chicken used. We declined to pay extra for this and instead went over the road to The Greenhouse, for an excellent breakfast. Our room could have been lovely, with a side view of the sea. Unfortunately the windows were filthy and we couldn’t enjoy the view. The furniture was dorm room standard and the carpet was badly stained. The bathroom was basic but clean. The bed was a regular double, which we found small as we usually sleep in a King. The room (in fact the hotel as a whole) was too warm. The radiators are permanently on and the windows open only partially. We had quite a lot of noise from the corridor and other rooms, but the killer was the water torture from the cistern which dripped all night.

Stayed one night whilst walking the coast path. Staff were friendly. Hotel and our room was clean with good standard of decor. Breakfast was plentiful with cereals, fruit, yogurt, pastries and a hot selection in a lovely room with sea views. The room rate including breakfast was exceptional value.

I was greeted by a very friendly Rachel and Ed. We were given our parking voucher and were upgraded to a room with a view all before 11am. Room was clean Newley decorated bright large and the same to be said of the shower room. The communal rooms are nicely decorated but the garden is still under maintenance. Breakfast was offered at an extra cost of £10 but we were leaving too early. The bar is not open at the moment but food and drinks purchased from outside were allowed to be consumed in the lounge.
