The Top House Inn

We have spent two single weeks (June and September) on holiday in Lizard Village this year and have visited the Top House several times for drinks and meals. On each occasion the service, food and drink have been first class. Each and every member of staff have been very friendly and helpful. The 'locals' are also friendly and welcoming and this reflects the general atmosphere of the pub, which to me makes this a 'proper' English pub. Looking forward to coming back in 2025 - will the excellent bitter 'Goalies Choice' still be available?!

We are a local family from Helston& StKeverne who met at The Top House for a Sunday meal together. Unfortunately our experience regarding our gluten free choice needs highlighting for the safety of others. My daughter & I ordered the food at the bar. The gentleman taking our order wasn't sure if the cheese& tomato gnocchi with cheesy garlic bread was gluten free. I pointed out it was advertised as a gf option on the menu. He came back after checking with the chef & yes it was gf, great we ordered it. My daughter was delighted & when it came she said the garlic bread was the best she had ever tasted and could she order some more? Pleased that she was enjoying it we went to order more with the lady who served our table. We were then flabbergasted to be told "oh the garlic bread isn't gluten free" My daughter had already eaten it, and that was more gluten than she has had in one sitting for several years. She said her goodbyes and went home immediatly. It was Wednesday this week before she felt better. This is outrageously irresposible, unprofessional and ignorant on many levels. It has damaged our confidence in eating out and is simply not acceptable in this day & age. I am shocked,angry & upset and I'm sorry Top House all your staff from top to bottom need training. This kind of carelessness around allergens& intolerances can be life threatening for some people. Not good enough. Not safe.

Well, it's not very often I have found a place run so poorly, but this must be it! You would think serving a Sunday lunch would be the simplicity itself. But probably only if you have experience, and the right staff around you. From what I witnessed today, the Top House have neither. A disgrace to St Austell Brewery. No wonder the locals stay away!

Although just a one-night stay as part of my South West motorcycle tour, I have to say how very impressed I was with the accommodation and catering. First of all, the room was well appointed with all the expected features, all decoration was fresh and recent. I particularly appreciated the quality of sleep and the excellent pillows. As an added bonus, this establishment really cares about its real ales and had several interesting ales on tap. Congratulations to the cellarman. Having decided to dine at The Top House, I can say the food was of the highest standard, fresh fish (I saw the fish being delivered) and chips led me to believe that the chef really cares about the quality of the food. This was on a much higher level than normal pub food. Thank you to the hosts Andy and Margaret and all their friendly staff for their hospitality.

We stayed on a B&B for 3 nights. This is not a 4* accommodation. The room decor was very tired and not as clean as expected. It was a big room but definitely needed updating especially the bathroom- on suite . The tv is extremely small but did the job. The breakfast room needs the door leading into the kitchen a good clean as it’s filthy. The staff were very friendly and the breakfast on the first 2 mornings ( cooked by a lady) were lovely. We said to give our compliments to the chef and were told that they would tell her. The last morning it was a different chef. We could hear him snorting and hacking up in the kitchen. This did put us off a bit. When our food arrived I only had toast and yogurt. But my husband’s full English was awfully. The scrambled egg was like rubber and the bacon wasn’t cooked, tomato was raw and everything was sitting in oil. He couldn’t eat it. It was such a shame. Not a great end to our stay. The location is great and we did have an evening meal and that was good. Overall the staff were nice and the room was big and a great location. It just needs a good clean, updating a bit and better chef on the day the lady chef is off duty.

Great stay in this lovely Inn. Upgraded to the Kingsize Suite which was sooo comfortable, with stunning views. A great bar with fabulous dinner/breakfast. A great bunch running this place. Would definitely recommend. We will be back. R and R.

Nice B&B which I stayed in last September, overall a good experience. I stayed whilst on a walking trip last year, I was given a nice room with distant sea views which was kind of them to upgrade me. On one of the nights I had an issue with the nearby lighthouse siren/foghorn all night, well I say nearby but it's down on the coast and the B&B is a good 5-10 min walk inland. That's not the B&B fault, but I wondered if better glazing would help drown the noise out, so it was hard to drop off to sleep that night and it was still going when I drove home the following morning. But I did eventually drop off to sleep that night, the comfortable bed helped for sure. I didn't hear any noise from the bar area on other nights so a comfortable stay. I ate here a couple of times for lunch and dinner and was fine, typical pub grub. Not a huge menu to choose from but generally was nice food. I would recommend booking for the restaurant to be sure to be served. I was solo so they managed to get me in easily enough. There is plenty of free car parking in the square outside, less than one minute walk.

Delicious lunch at The Top House. Stopped here after a coastal walk. Staff behind the bar were very welcoming. I have a gluten intolerance and pregnant and they offered a combination of dishes which were absolutely delicious. My husband had the pie of the day which he very enjoyed. Portion sizes were very generous as well.

We ate twice at this pub during our stay at the Lizard. On both occasions it was an evening meal. Really good food, atmosphere and service. The one night there was a but of a wait, but to be expected on a busy weekend. Would definitely recommend. The menu is limited but the food was delicious and good quality.
