The Divi Flamingo Beach hotel has been my home away from home for 35 years now. It's not a luxury hotel, but its best feature is luxurious — its proximity to the ocean. You don't have to wind your way through a large resort and maze of walkways to get to the water — it's just footsteps away from the hotel and timeshare rooms. The resort has 2 pools, restaurants, a beach bar, a dive shop and friendly staff. The grounds are landscaped and well-kept, as are the rooms. The timeshares have the bonus of a kitchenette with a large refrigerator. The diving and snorkeling on Bonaire are among the best in the world (corals, turtles, fish - not empty patches of sand like other destinations), and you can do this right off the hotel. Because it's a diver's paradise, you can dive from any marked dive site along the shore or book boat dives with the Divi. I love that the hotel within walking distance of Kralendijk, the main town on the island with shops and restaurants, so you don't need to rent a car to get there. That said, if you want to explore the island, there's a Hertz car rental right here at the hotel. I suggest booking in advance to improve your chances of renting a truck or a Jeep with a high undercarriage, as smaller cars do not do well on Bonaire's rough and sometimes unpaved, rutted dirt roads. If you don't want to dive or snorkel you can book other activities through the activities desk, or explore windsurfing, kite surfing and a relatively new sport, Blokart land sailing, which occurs on a track with 3-wheeled vehicles that have a sail powered by the tradewinds. Speaking of winds, Bonaire is technically outside the hurricane belt, so it doesn't get hit with destruction like other islands. Although as I post this, the island is experiencing an unusual amount of rain for what is historically the dry season. As with every international adventure, it's good to have patience with new cultures. I hope that like me, you will come home from the Divi with warm memories and a desire to come back often.
