The lodge has been there for a long time and at the moment it is self catering ( bring your own food and drinks ). They do sell wine and beer. The water is plentiful and safe to drink. The cabins are warm and comfortable and the shared kitchen is large and easy to use. It’s a 13.5 km hike/ bike/ ski and is not all that easy. 1250 ft elevation gain. The trail is wide and safe. Once there it’s a wild and beautiful place. Well worth the hard work to get there. It’s a back county cabin setting so don’t expect a 5 star hotel.

This review is a general review regarding Shadow Lake Lodge because of their lack of consideration for other backcountry users. Because of our experience with the Lodge, this was one of the worst experiences we have had at a Parks Canada “backcountry” campsite (and we have stayed at a lot of them). While we were staying at the Shadow Lake campsite (2 nights) and Shadow Lake Lodge (now operated by the Alpine Club of Canada) ran their generator at totally inappropriate times (2230-0230 & 0630 - 1000). Totally inconsiderate! When we complained, we were given the excuse that the engineering firm the ACC contracts, controls the generator “remotely”. Also, they burned all their garbage in an incinerator! Who burns garbage these days and how much garbage do they generate in a day that they need to burn it several times within that day (especially in the remote backcountry)?! Of course this was also done at inappropriate times throughout the day with the smoke wafting into the campsite!! It was gross and again totally inconsiderate of all the other backcountry users! This is totally against the ACC core values (as listed on their website) and Banff Parks mandate. Unacceptable!

Because of our experience with the Lodge, this was one of the worst experiences we have had at a Parks Canada “backcountry” campsite (and we have stayed at a lot of them). While we were staying at the Shadow Lake campsite (2 nights after Twin Lakes) and the Shadow Lake Lodge (now operated by the Alpine Club of Canada) ran their generator at totally inappropriate times (2230-0230 & 0630 - 1000). Totally inconsiderate! When we complained, we were given the excuse that the engineering firm the ACC contracts, controls the generator “remotely” (yeah right). Also, they burned all their garbage in an incinerator! Who burns garbage these days , especially in the remote backcountry?! Of course this was done consistently at inappropriate times with the smoke wafting into the campsite!! It was gross and again totally inconsiderate of all the other backcountry users! From my research, this is totally against the ACC core values (as listed on their website) and Banff Parks mandate 😡

My childhood friend and I hiked to Shadow Lake Lodge for a two-night stay, and we could have stayed for two months! We enjoyed the feeling of backpacking, but really enjoyed the prepared meals and real beds too. To say the staff was 5-star is an understatement. Mitch gave us trail beta, and we enjoyed chatting with him throughout our stay. Ryan was a superb chef and made amazing meals. He was also supremely friendly with the guests. Every staff member was welcoming and very friendly. The cabins were very comfortable and had about the best views of the meadow and peaks I could have dreamt up. I am already hoping to plan a few more trips out there for a winter trip and some more summer trips. The day hiking once you are out to Shadow Lake is stunning, and I now have hundreds of pictures to go through and edit! This was part of a 10 day trip to Vancouver and Banff, and was easily my favorite part (which is saying a lot, because the entire trip has been a joy and memorable). Thank you to the whole staff, and I truly hope to see you again sooner than later! Kimberly *Molly Maguire Rooms: 5.0 Service: 5.0 Location5.0 Hotel highlights: Great view · Romantic · Quiet · Kid-friendly Rooms: The cabins are really comfy. They stayed pretty cool and we were there on a warmer week in July. There are lights powered by solar, so they request you turn them off when not in the room, the beds were comfy and there was a table to play cards. There isn't running water in the cabins, rather a wash basin and gray water bucket under the counter. Each cabin has a nice little deck with chairs and a table to enjoy the views (phenomonal). The bathrooms are a short walk away and were very clean. No flushing toilets, but a nice hot shower and well-lit vanity areas with sinks. Nearby activities: There are trails galore in the area and they varied in difficulty and lengths. A short 1km walk takes you to the lake, and a nice uphill hike to Gibbon Pass will afford you warmed up muscles and height for a new perspective of the nearby peaks. You really can choose what is best for you and your group. Walkability:The grounds are small, and there is a small gravel path going between all of the cabins, the "rec room" cabin, bathrooms, and the dining cabin. Accessibility is fine, especially considering the hike in that has already been accomplished. The hike takes 4-5 hours, with the first 3/4 of it being pretty easy (rolling up and down hills, sure footing) and the last 1/4 totally doable. However, it will get your blood pumping as it is mostly uphill. Food & drinks: Breakfast was at 8 am each morning and had plenty of coffee, teas, juice along with fruit, granola, yogurt, etc. Then after you get seated a hot portion of the meal is brought out. We had breakfast potatoes, eggs, a frittata etc (we requested vegetarian). A sack lunch with sandwiches are then put out to grab after breakfast along with many other snacks to pack along for the day's hikes. At 3pm the staff puts out snac

Individual cabins make this lodge extra cute, the food was relish and there are a lot of hiking options from the camp. Heads up the cabin is not on the lake. There is an easy way in so there’s more families and kids than other backcountry lodges but the vibe was great! We went the ‘hard’ way, it was awesome, no regrets. Way more views than the alternative. Overall fantastic experience!

My husband, Konrad, and I spent the last 5 nights of July 2023 at Shadow Lake Lodge. The experience was outstanding in every way. The mountain setting is stunning. Several hikes are readily accessible using Shadow Lake Lodge as a base. The facilities at the Lodge – the individual guest cabins, the dining cabin, the living room cabin, and the toilet facilities - are all top-notch. But the standout feature of Shadow Lake Lodge is the cordial environment that the Lodge staff intentionally creates and strives to maintain. Sociability between staff and guests, and among guests, is actively encouraged. The attention the staff pays to this effort is impressive. Counterintuitively, the day at Shadow Lake Lodge begins with a candle lit dinner. The Lodge Manager (Mitch our first evening, Alex the next four) rings a triangle (or has a guest, likely a young one, do it) at 6:30 P.M. to call everyone to the dining cabin. Depending on the total number of guests, Alex assigns people to one of up to three tables. Table assignments are for dinner that evening and breakfast the next morning. The second evening, we were assigned to a different table to sit with a different group of people. (The most guests present on any night we were there was 27; the fewest, 16.) The evolving seating arrangements worked great. We met several fascinating, and highly agreeable people. Many guests were locals; some from as close as Banff. One family of five was from Portland. There was a couple from Rotterdam, The Netherlands. One couple from Cambridge, Massachusetts, another from Vermont. People had all sorts of interesting things to say, stories to share. There were several teachers; two professors of astronomy (one studying the origin of planets; the other, the origin of black holes); a psychotherapist; a pathologist of some sort; a former general counsel of a nonprofit trade association; a neurologist, who studies and treats black holes of the mind; a grandmother who rows competitively and plays bridge 6 times a week; and a couple who publishes maps of the Canadian Rockies, GemTrek Maps, including the very useful ones given to guests and showing hikes local to Shadow Lake Lodge. As guests settled at their tables, Nick, the Chef, came out of the kitchen, introduced himself, and explained all he’d prepared for that evening’s feast. Nick has a real feel for his work. He brought a lot of thought and skill to his selection and preparation of our food. The food was delicious, nourishing, and served in ample portions. Each course was plated really nicely. Dinners began with a breadbasket with one thick slice of sourdough (which was slightly different every night) for each guest. The bread went quickly. More was available on request. A first course was served. I didn’t keep notes; but I recall there were a couple different configurations of salad, all good. One evening the first course was pork belly. (Konrad and I are dairy eating pescatarians; a fact we made known to the Lod

My husband and I spent 3 nights in a king size cabin. Room was comfortable. Staff was friendly and attentive. Food was amazing - beautifully presented gourmet meals. Breakfast starts with fruit salad, yogurt, home made baked treats (scones and muffins), and a hot entree (over the 3 days we got sunny side up eggs with a yummy sausage; pancake with bacon; eggs Benedict). Then you pick up your lunch bag with preordered sandwiches. They also have trail mix, sweet treats, fresh fruit and carrot/celery sticks for you to add to your bag. The dinners we got were cod, lamb chops and pork tenderloin. They seat you with different people every day so you can mingle. You are encouraged to be mindful of the environment. Solar powered lights, grey water recycling etc. Shower and very clean pit toilets are in a separate building. There is one shower and two toilets for women; one shower, a urinal and one toilet for the men. If I had one wish it would be to add another shower and toilet as sometimes there is a wait. The trails are well marked and take you to beautiful vistas, waterfalls, mountain passes…
