The New Castle Hotel

Good hotel. Near to Do Drul Chorten.

I recommend not to book this hotel as my experience was badly affected by this stay. 1. No lift and it is not mentioned anywhere. So, you are the coolie to carry all your luggage to first floor (even if you have lots of luggage. ) 2. Wardrobe provided was half the height of a normal person. 3. Room had so many lights but none were sufficient to even light up the room, so it was like a dark movie setup. 4. Window was provided but was instructed not to open as fly, birds etc. could get in and make the room dirty. So, we were not allowed to have fresh air (and no ac room due to cold weather in Gangtok.) 5. One person handles both the hotel reception and the restaurant; so you may have to call his mobile number every time you need anything. 6. Hotel restaurant gets closed by 8:30pm (which was not informed to us and guess what nothing about the hotel was informed to us while check-in) and you will have to either walk out for food or order online. 7. If you ask for breakfast early in the morning, you will get to know that the restaurant starts at 8am, so if you plan to get out for the tour at early hours, don't select complimentary breakfast option as you will never get before 8am. 8. We had ordered chicken gravy for lunch and the smell and taste was like of some chemical used chicken. The restaurant serves pork too. 9. One morning we had to take bath in cold water as the geyser was not working, and when informed to house keeping guy, he went out of the room door and switched on a switch which will turn on the geyser. It was not informed to us that to use geyser we need to switch on once outside the room door and then once inside the bathroom. 10. You may feel after staying here that you have not got the service you expected and you have paid for. So, don't select this hotel. You have better choices available in mg marg.

Was here on work for just a day but the good reviews on different sites gave us confidence to book Newcastle. Genuinely good service. We reached late but they opened up their restaurant for us to have a meal and our breakfast was ready on the dot of 7 so we could start off early. Clean rooms. Hot water. Good tasty food. Lovely ambience. Really appreciated Raviji's service. Keep it up!

Hotel New Castle score high on all fronts. It's very clean, in a great location, and the staff take hospitality to the next level. Ravi is the most reliable person I've come across in organizing trips. He quickly grasps what exactly the guests are looking for, and finds the most suitable solution rapidly and efficiently. He found us good vehicles , safe drivers at a reasonable cost. To us, Ravi is the face of Gangtok now. In fact, on the first evening, he smilingly assured us he would personally come to fetch us back if we couldn't get a taxi. We did get one :-) I was amazed to find him hand us some beautifully packed muffins and sandwiches ( at 7 am !) as were setting out on a long trip - he said we wouldn't find decent vegetarian options at the end of our journey. His mantra really is " Athithi Devo Bhavaha" - the Guest is God. Sanju would cheerfully fetch us wonderful piping hot coffee early in the morning, when the restaurant was not even open . Rajen , always smiling and helpful; at the front desk . The hotel is on the main road, about a km to MG Market. Time taken is a better measure than distance as the roads wind up and down a lot in Gangtok. However local share taxis charge Rs 20/ per person to take you there, so the location is still very central and comfortable. Perhaps there could be better hotels - but you would be hard put to find people who would work so hard to make your trip a wonderful memory. I would recommend this whole heartedly.
