This hotel was a great base in which to explore Maderia, it is set in beautiful gardens is spotlessly clean and has the added bonus of an outdoor pool and small gym on site. The hotel is full of antique furniture and paintings, has several reading areas and a snooker room downstairs. There is a complimentary bus into Funchal on weekdays between 10am and 6pm which can be booked at reception. We saw signs advertising yoga and massage for an additional cost. Breakfast is served in the main building and is a buffet style system with a wide range of hot and cold options. Lunch is served in the pool house from a menu and has a good number of choices. Regarding the evening meal, my husband and I had booked a full board package (breakfast, lunch and dinner) We were a little surprised to discover that there was a set menu every evening consisting of a starter, fish course, meat course and dessert. I dont eat fish or turkey and my husband had allergies to some of the dessert ingredients, we had to keep explaining that we needed alternatives. Then at the end of the meal we were presented with a bill for the water at our table(4.5 euros) apparently no drinks are included in the full board package, even WATER! What really made us angry was when my husband became ill and was not eating any of the meals I tried to take some toast to him and was told that I could not take any food from the restuarant to our room, we would need to order room service at an additional charge! I also asked for some extra water for our room as it was all he could keep down and was told we were only allowed 1 complimentary bottle of water for our room a day and would have to pay an additional 4.5 euros for each extra bottle, which i thought was outrageous considering he had not eaten any meals for 2 days! we ended up going to the local supermarket to get bread rolls and water.
