We stayed for one week at the end of January 2025. My first impressions were not that good as we'd had a long journey and I was probably tired, however, the power of a welcoming smile was lacking. The glass of Maderia wine went down well. The windows in the reception area could have done with a good clean. The hotel is on many levels so the explanation of your room being on the 6th floor but being told to take the ramp *down* from the 6th floor confused me for a very short time. We soon got used to the geography and this wasn't any more trouble. Following this, everything perked up. The staff are very good and attentive. They've all been trained well so that no particular individuals stood head-and-shoulder above their peers. The food was very good and had a good level of variety for lunch and dinner. Only a minority of people seemed to dress up a bit more for dinner. Our room (No. 620) was nicely at the end of a corridor and did provide the paid-for ocean/side view through the window; our balcony faced East. Main criticism of this room which we hadn't noted from others feedback is that there is no toilet door - just a gap and roller-blinds for a bit of privacy. This is okay for close couples, like us, but wouldn't please everyone! The couple that happened to be in the adjacent room were chain smokers, starting each day with an early cigarette or two and the smoke wafted in through our ventilation grill. The hotel swimming pools were too cold for me to risk swimming in in January though a select set of hardy people did brave the 19/20°C water. The hotel was providing two daily shuttle runs into/from Funchal (front). We walked into Funchal and then caught the coach back. It was a coach rather than a minibus which was a surprise. The shuttle starts its return journey back to the hotel from just outside the Christiano Ronaldo museum ("CR7"). It stops on the South side of the road at the East end of the red-roofed building and then departs briefly to the East before using the tunnel. As touched on earlier, the hotel has a number of levels that you might miss. You can take a lift down to the beach level and then wander along the coast path in each direction. The westerly route was blocked by storm damage that they were repairing; the easterly route, towards, Funchal includes a tunnel cut into the cliff that kids of all ages can enjoy. There's also the tennis court, table tennis table, mini/crazy golf and big chessboard. There is also a bus stop very close to the lower lift level where you could get a bus directly to the airport. A few things that would have improved our room include a second bedside lamp and bedside cabinet, somewhere to store our suitcase, some hooks to hang our stuff. We didn't ask the staff to address these points whilst there. Lastly, we celebrated a birthday while we were out there and the hotel very kindly provided a Birthday cake and bottle. All in all a great holiday especially having some January
