Historic stairs…
We wanted to experience a somewhat historic place and The Highland club fit this. Situated in what was once a Fort, then became an Abbey & school… it has an interesting history. The property is lovely and the location in Fort Augustus cannot be beat. We had a 2 bedroom flat- it was spacious and well appointed.
Check in was challenging. Evidently, there are 3 different groups that manage the property. There is no clear “check in” area. We found an office for one group who phoned the correct office- then waited several minutes for the person we needed to come to us. That person was friendly and gave us a complete tour of what was available for us at the property- which is substantial!
Another thing to note: no lift. Our flat was on the 3rd floor so we had to haul luggage up 4.5 flights of stairs… we just didn’t expect that.
Kitchen was fairly well appointed with lots of pantry items included.
We wish they would have provided a map of the buildings & grounds on a single sheet of paper (or easily accessed app/download). It was easy to get lost in the buildings.
The restaurant on the property is managed by a different group. We stopped in for a pint- but we’re made quickly aware that staffing is an issue- the servers were all very young and inexperienced and the man who seemed to be the manager just seemed like he was scolding them as opposed to training. The location, again, is the best reason to go there, but we didn’t eat there. The Bothy pub provided better service.
