Unscripted Durham - JDV by Hyatt

There are cockroaches at the property!! I found 2 in my room over the course of a 4 night stay and constantly saw them on my walk to the elevator. Very disappointed knowing this is a Hyatt property and all my experiences at a Hyatt have been positive except for this one

Unscripted Durham is a very cool, vibey, modern hotel with a great staff. It's centrally located near lots of restaurants and bars, and walking distance to the Durham Bulls stadium and the Durham Performing Arts Center. Lots to like about it. However, we were there for a wedding over a weekend and the late night noise outside in the square were ridiculous. Loud music, cars, motorcycles, and other sounds made sleeping difficult--which hurt the overall experience.

Very fun hotel, especially for couples. You don't really have to leave once you check in, the pool area is only for adults and anything else is within walking distance.

We loved the welcoming staff, from the moment we entered the lobby. The pool was a throwback to 1960s and they have a DJ some nights. We loved everything about our stay.

We stayed at Unscripted Durham this weekend but we will not be back. aside from the loud music from the dj (somewhat expected) and the smell of mold in our room, the fire alarm on the second floor went off for about 20 minutes starting at 12:45am. we called down to the desk with no response unsure it was the fire alarm at first. finally we were told (along with other second floor guests) that “this just happens sometimes on the second floor - we are turning it off”. a false alarm happening once makes sense, unfortunately the same situation is shared in previous reviews. this is not only incredibly frustrating and resulted in loss of sleep before our very early flight but also feels like a fire violation. what happens when it’s not just a false alarm? feels super sketchy to me and we did not feel safe knowing that the alarm was turned off without further investigation. this was supposed to be a special trip for my husband and I without our kids celebrating him beating leukemia for the second time in five years but unfortunately it turned into only more stress and a sleepless night. this situation was not handled professionally and does not reflect well on Hyatt as a whole.

WOW! Beautiful layout with a new retro vibe. Rooms where big and cozy with a oversize shower. Walk to several restaurants.

Love the hotel. It is great that they preserved it while making the experience more than just a time capsule. Only issue is the DJ at pool. DJ thinks LOUD equates to good. Liked the music had to leave pool to escape ear pain.

Originally we booked an 'interior' room - which we didn't know was code for 'room with no window'. Wasn't happy that our booking agent didn't know and emails confirming didn't tell us. At the hotel, they said it was our responsibility to go to their website to understand room bookings - and I guess they don't appreciate that 3rd parties helped them book their hotel. Finally we were switched to a room with a window and it was on the floor with the rooftop pool - which was a fantastic pool and views. Food was ok, service was good, and I liked that they had a water station. Lobby was normal and staff were nice. The hotel routinely has parties on the extended weekend that looked fun - we were there for another event so we didn't attend. Parking was high at $25/night

PLEASE take the time to read this review before booking your stay at Unscripted Durham. Our stay at this hotel was a nightmare. The staff was rude and unresponsive, especially during a late-night fire alarm incident that woke up our entire family, including our 4-month-old baby! All the fire alarms on the 2nd floor were going off for nearly 20 minutes at 12:45 am! We tried calling the front desk for information or help, but there was no answer. Finally, after the 5th call, someone answered, but as I was explaining the situation about the fire alarms she hung up on me. Absolutely unacceptable and unsafe. We had no idea if the building was on fire or if it was a mechanical issue. No answer from the front desk during such a stressful situation was beyond disappointing. The complete disregard for guest safety and the unacceptable level of customer service are deeply concerning. Avoid this location if you prioritize customer service and a good night's sleep. Save yourself the grief and avoid this hotel!
