Our review of the Buccaneer Beach Club is a mixed bag I would like to start by saying the staff are wonderful - the ever smiling Stanley, the exceptional house keepers, the friendly groundsmen and the helpful ladies in reception are all a credit to the hotel The suites are spacious, with a comfy bed and large shower The kitchenette is basic but functional Maybe a few more utensils, storage boxes, tea towels and dish cloths (no dishwasher) wouldn’t go amiss The setting is very pretty and well kept There were a few geckos and hermit crabs wandering around, hummingbirds and a cute, skittish ginger kitten, all in all a very nice setting Now for the not so nice stuff The pool was surrounded by greenery, trees, tall plants etc so constantly full of leaves and bits of shrubbery etc It was cleaned in the morning and that seemed to be it for the day as far as I could see Unfortunately the noise, morning, noon and night was ridiculous No glass on the windows to act as a sound barrier and the walls and ceilings are paper thin, you can hear everything….. The smell of rotting food from the neighbouring restaurant was overpowering sometimes The tiny beach at the property was crowded everyday and no one from the hotel managed or oversaw the allocation of sun loungers meant solely for the guests use only Likewise, towels were used as place savers both on the beach and around the pool, empty for hours on end. A notice stated no reserving of the loungers but when mentioned to a member of staff, nothing was done so very disappointing On the subject of beach towels, they rarely had any available, it might be an idea to pack your own if you don’t like laying on damp and sandy ones (nothing dries very well here so some clothes airers might be an idea) The cruise liner guests turned up en masse most days too making the beach crowded and noisy. It defies logic why, in a country that boasts 365 beaches, why most ended up here. We gave up in the end and drove gingerly (pot hole hell - need a 4x4!) to other beaches each day There are bugs everywhere so be sure to pack insect repellent and After Bite, you’ll need it! It would be a great idea if the hotel installed bug screens on the patios and balconies too so guests can use them in the evenings without being eaten alive The crickets screech ALL night, another disadvantage of having no glass on the windows to block out the sound The hotel provides ashtrays on every balcony, patio and table so people smoke everywhere without control and it stinks….. Obviously out of their control but worth mentioning are the ever present jet skis that turn up like a plague of locust every day. Something needs to be done about them before they kill someone All in all a pleasant enough stay although it is doubtful we will be returning to this hotel or the Dickenson Bay Area in general
