Love this mid-century modern hotel. Its storied history is just the icing on the cake. It's actually the third Ponchartrain Hotel to be built on this site. Location is good; a decent walk to many places; in good weather, a brisk 20 minute walk will get you to Comerica Park and Ford Field. The "people mover" train station is in the Huntington Plaza building. kitty corner from the main entrance on ground level. I picked up the train at the Cadillac Plaza Station a few blocks from Comerica Park for a convenient return from a Tigers game. Be advised that there is only valet parking, at $45/day without "in/out" privileges. Can't help but wonder how they clean all that glass; both on the big windows in the rooms and in the public areas, but they do. Whole place is very well-maintained, including hallways and guest rooms. Finishes are top notch with new appearing fixtures and ceramic tile in the (tiny) bathroom with excellent (also small) shower. Rooms are also perhaps below average in size, but my bed was fabulous (firm), pillows decent, and the rooms were attractive. I liked the seemingly new silky blue window drapes with sheer curtains. Room and bath maintenance and cleanliness were all above average. I stayed in a queen suite (which doubles my space and is nicely laid out with glass windowed doors to the bedroom) The living room had a large marble top dining table and four upholstered wood dining chars; making the room seem less spacious. There are two large TV's; one had cable channels; while oddly the other had only numerous streaming options (no live news) If TV is important to you, you might want to check the TV inputs on your set to make sure you get both. The suite was only $40 more and includes a wet bar. All rooms have refrigerators. There are no microwaves available, except a small one off the lobby in the gift shop/snacking area. There is no room service, and for carryout you need to order in person at the restaurant (there are two restaurant /bars) but last orders to kitchen are 9pm, both restaurants and bars close at 10 pm. Only hot breakfast is a buffet in the restaurant off the lobby, for $18.49--total $20.09. There aren't many hot choices; but a decent variety overall, with a large selection of fresh fruit, Danish, English muffins and bagels for toasting; yogurt, juices, etc. The room is a very a nice place to eat in the morning, with a wall of windows and views. What is really exceptional about Ft. Ponchartrain is the people who work there; from the Front Desk, to the morning buffet staff, to the valet parking team. These are the nicest most accommodating folks you could hope for. They really help elevate your overall experience.
