Nip into Derby in minutes or escape to the South Derbyshire countryside just as fast. When you arrive, it’s got a bit of Bond-movie flair — just dial a number and voilà, the gates magically swing open. We stayed in the top-floor King Room (fair warning: if stairs aren’t your thing, this might not be your match), but it’s well worth it! Think huge super king bed, a bathroom that could host its own spa day with a double bath and walk-in shower, and tasteful decor that feels more ‘cosy home’ than ‘generic hotel’. Nigel, your host, clearly gets it. Fresh milk in the fridge, tea, coffee, hot chocolate — all the essentials to make you feel properly spoiled. Liked privacy, quiet, clean, list of places to eat, Nigel was very helpful with our difficult overseas payment. Being from rural area it was difficult understanding security but destails were very good, just our lack of ability. I did get locked in bathroom at 3 a.m. as when I tried to get out as the lock fell out of the door handle. After trying to phone my husband as I used the phone as a torch, I ended up knocking on the adjoining wall. He finally woke up and came and opened door - it waas funny as it reminded me of when my mother in law had similar issue when she stayed at our house in the USA - payback for laughing at her! FYI vent inbathroom does not seem to work and could not open window so steam collected. Lovely place and not as noisy as a hotel.
