We stayed one night at this hotel during a trip across southern England. We had two rooms, both full of character and charm. The beds were comfortable, and the atmosphere was cozy. However, the rooms are not air-conditioned and were quite warm. We opened the windows for ventilation, but unfortunately, someone was burning a fire in the fireplace, and the smoke smell drifted into our room. We requested a fan and, after waiting about an hour, had to ask again. At that point, the front desk staff kindly gave us his personal desk fan, which eventually made the room more comfortable. The hotel’s location is ideal for hiking to Wistman’s Wood, which was a highlight of our stay. The hike was beautiful and well worth the effort. If I could give this hotel a 3.5-star rating, I would. Unfortunately, breakfast was a letdown. Though breakfast hours were listed as 8:00–9:30, we arrived at 8:50 to find the cold buffet picked over with no pastries remaining. When we asked if items would be restocked, we were told no. The granola was so hard it was inedible, and the staff seemed more focused on wrapping up than making guests feel welcome. The made-to-order items were just okay. Overall, this hotel had charm and a great location, but the breakfast experience and lack of air conditioning affected our comfort and impression.
