We booked this hotel as a one night stop on a weeks trip around the UK. We checked in with Charlie on reception. We were disappointed with the terrifyingly loud air con, broken bedside lamp and seemingly broken tv. And the fact that the council had filled up the hotel with people who had no other accommodation. Charlie was an absolute angel and sorted the tv out, she couldn’t fix the terrifying air con but brought me an extra duvet. I have two long term chronic health conditions and to be cold and uncomfortable is a big no. We didn’t eat in the restaurant but got a take away and Charlie, who was running the bar and taking out meals in the restaurant, again was a total star and provided us with plates, cutlery and condiments for us to take to our room. We have to say, we both slept very well considering our expectations were pretty low at this point. The bed was very comfortable and the pillows were fab. The rating would be higher if we had been forewarned that the hotel would be full of council house clientele. We had travelled a long way and paid £120 to stay there and whilst we didn’t have any issues with people, the man drinking white lightening at 5pm outside, and again the following morning at 8am, made us feel that it was possible we would. In our opinion, Holiday Inn Express should have stated they were housing people in advance of our booking so we could have made a decision about our accommodation on our much needed break. After all, we booked a hotel stay and not a homeless shelter stay for £120. Overall, Charlie saved our trip and the review of the hotel. She is so hardworking and went above our expectations to help us, she deserves recognition for this, thank you Charlie!
