Embassy Suites by Hilton Charleston Historic District

A friend & I stayed 1 night (9/21/2024) at this hotel in the historic district of Charleston. Our room had a living area, bath & bedroom. Each area was very shabby, drab & unpleasant: Raw wood showed where paint had been scraped off; fixtures had been replaced, but the original hardware had not been removed or the walls repainted; the furniture did not appear clean; & the carpet was clearly, but poorly patched. Lighting in the living area was so dim that it was completely unusable. The cavernous historic main lobby was uninviting & depressing & did not invite a walk through. Do not be deceived by the updated smaller front lobby & eating areas -- these do not reflect the true, sad state of this hotel. The hotel photos do not represent the true nature of this neglected place! We paid $500 for 1 night -- outrageous for its condition & never again! The only positive in this sad tale was the hotel's central location.

It’s a dump— avoid xxxx They have been saying they were updating property for more than 5 years Simply lying while the staff is pleasant, and the breakfast is good and the location is excellent. The hotel itself and the management are at best pitiful

The high points: Historic building with tons of cool architecture. The location is perfect - Walkable to nearly everything. Really nice breakfast and an evening cocktail reception too. Very friendly staff overall. A special nod to the weekend omelet guy at breakfast. This man deserves a raise. The low points: The rooms overall are very tired. This was our second visit here, but it has been maybe 5 years and things continue to not be updated. Tiles popping out in the bathroom, broken faucet, smells overall a bit musty and in general just a bit run down. Some of that is excusable as it is a very old building, but the bed that creaks VERY loudly and the condition of the carpet and walls is not excusable. Simply put they are wear items and they have reached the end of the road.

This hotel could best be described as threadbare. It is not seedy, but has definitely seen better days. The rooms are dark and cell-like and my only outside window was filthy. Location is good and breakfast decent. That’s the best things you can say about this hotel. I would not return.

These is a difference between “historic” and old. This hotel is old, outdated, dirty feeling and lacking the Hilton quality. We are HH members and always stay at a Hilton when available. This is our first stay at this property and it will without doubt be our last. Broken curtains, dirty carpets, musky rooms and peeling paint. Do better Hilton!

This hotel is the worst Embassy Suites I've ever stayed in. I'm a diamond member and love hiltons but this was a joke. The rooms are so dated. I believe the hotel opened in 1996. I doubt that the carpet has ever been replaced. Old. The rooms are so dated Staff was friendly but this hotel is in some serious need of updating especially for the price they are charging. Wow!!!!!!

Disappointed from the start. Others have said it. I didn’t read enough outside the Hilton app - my bad. Sort of cool to walk in with the grand areas, but so dated and run down it is a travesty for the historic area. Disgusting really. Have you out back any money into the property over the last 50 years? Beyond the nasty carpet, windows and so many other things, my poor kids are stuck sleeping on some old springs sticking from a decades old, what looks to be poop stained, 2 inch mattress. The location better be good for what you want and you better be passed out drunk if you want to enjoy this one. Hilton or embassy suites quality. I would have said no, except half of the past ten stays this year at all Hilton brands have been similar. They seem to be falling down. So much for diamond status and buying into HGV. Time to change to start flipping over to Marriott I guess.

Excellent location and affordable price relative to other hotels in the area. Very friendly and courteous staff who are willing to help. The valet and bar are understaffed at peak times. Call the front desk 10-15 minutes ahead of time to have your car pulled up. Pack your patience during the evening reception. Updates and repairs are needed but, if you just need the basics, this is your place.

It’s really hard to put into words how disappointed I am with the Embassy Suites Charleston. Let me start with something good. The location is prime. Very close to the Aquarium and the African American Museum. Now onto the issues. First, I don’t know who oversees sales/group reservations, but they did a horrible job relaying information to the kitchen staff. We were a family reunion and there were at least four volleyball teams at the hotel along with other vacationing guest. Someone had to have dropped the ball in letting the kitchen know because the continental breakfast was lackluster on Saturday morning. I woke before my family and decided to head to breakfast. At 7:20 the cook stated the bacon that was out was the last. Breakfast starts at 7. Seriously?! With the number of people that booked this was highly disappointing. I had to go and buy my son something else to eat which of course is a major inconvenience because one of the reasons we had our reunion here is they have breakfast and a bar. Oh, the bar was a major letdown. This was the first Embassy I have stayed at where the bar closes when the complimentary hour is over. So, after 7:30 you had to walk to a bar or wait to have a valet get your car and drive to a bar. Huge disappointment there. Back to breakfast, they also did not have any tomatoes for a veggie omelet, and they ran out of brown sugar for the hot cereal. Second, the issue is regarding my room. I informed the manager on duty my room was hot and he let me know maintenance would bring a fan in the room. I never received it and I let Mr. Belton Joyner know about it. What’s really aggravating is when I was leaving, they had a fan at the first desk. By this time, I was just ready to go because I didn’t sleep well while here. Third, the conference room we reserved to gather as a family was not set up correctly. Again, sales/group reservation did not communicate well. My sister requested round tables and sweet tea for the room. We got there and there was a mix of round and rectangular tables. There was also unsweetened tea. Horrible! Luckily, we had Mr. Earl and his staff. Mr. Earl apologized several times. He informed us that they would get the tea corrected. We had to wait but he was very nice, even brought some sodas for those that were waiting. I can’t express enough how great Mr. Earl was. I can’t remember the guy’s name that helped pack up the food that night, but he also cooked the grits Sunday morning, and they were so good. They were not watery like Saturday. Mr. Earl also apologized about the mix-up with tables. My sister was really upset because she talked to Reagan and let her know she wanted round tables. Now the major issue with the conference rooms FRUIT FLIES galore. This is something that needs to be addressed with upper management. Someone from Mr. Earl crew did get some coffee filters to cover the appetizers we ordered. Mr. Earl came and adjusted the air in the room because it got too warm. The conference
