The Umstead Hotel and Spa

This was the best hotel experience I've had in a long time, the service and staff were incredible very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful we will be back to experience the rest of the amenities that the hotel has to offer,we had a full schedule to achieve and had limited time to get the full experience . The Umstead was nothing but accommodating to us from the moment we called to make a reservation. They are extremely pet friendly, with a small dog park and long walking trails along the water. They also offer dog beds, food/water bowls, and treats. The service at both the bar and restaurant were phenomenal and everyone we spoke to was kind and genuinely wanted to make our experience one to remember. Additionally, the views are even more amazing than the photos portray! We were considering another hotel that wasn’t as far of a drive but decided on The Umstead and couldn’t have been happier. We can’t wait for out next trip to come back.

The hotel is beautiful. Parking was easy and check in was a breeze. Lots to do in the area by car. I booked a lake view king room, and was disappointed to find that my room view was mostly blocked by the building. We could see a sliver of lake but I would not have called it a lake view room nor I would have paid more for it. Only other snafu is that we asked for different pillows and it took us three calls over multiple hours to complete that request, but it did work out. Beyond that, even during a hurricane, we had a great time at the hotel and spa. I would come back to this property and recommend it to couples looking to get away!

This is absolutely worth the money. The service is BEYOND excellent. I was ALWAYS greeted with a friendly professional manner. The rooms are incredibly clean and comfortable. Every need or want is met. I highly recommend making an appointment at their state of the art spa followed by a dinner at Herons. Herons is an experience worth having. The food quality is 10/10. Dont forget to stop by the giftshop where they sell exquisite pieces of art and decor which I took advantage of.

Arrived at 3 pm and have been told that room was not ready. I decided to leave luggage and join the pool while waiting. At 4:40 pm I received message that room is ready. This is absolutely not acceptable for the reputation of this hotel. When booked the room 2-3 weeks in advance I was interested in booking a Spa. Previously, I have been told that Spa is prioritized for hotel guests. When asked for the treatment availability, there was one 30 min targeted massage available and nothing else. That was surprising to hear. Visiting Umstead Spa previously, I experienced on multiple occasions 50 minutes massage for advertised 60 minutes treatment. They required you to be ready 15 min prior to your appointment and then showed past your start of the appointment time. It is worth money visiting Spa, however advertisement and their policy should be updated to clearly state the time of the actual treatment.

This is a five star hotel, with a five star restaurant, excellent operating staff and likely the worst executive management of any where I have stayed. We arrived at 3:29 for our 3pm check in and were informed the room we “reserved” would have guests till 4pm. Once they left we would need to give house keeping time to turn the room over. I inquired if this was an error and told no, this is hotel policy for Amex holders. I asked for another room as my wife and young children had been driving 8 hours and left early to let the kids have pool time. They said no rooms available. Mistakes happen. But this was not an error but company policy to rent a room to two guests at the same time. I feel horrible for the floor managers who also expressed their displeasure in the Umstead practice of charging multiple guests for the same room at the same time. If you are an owner or executive of the umstead you should be embarrassed. Amex doesn’t own the hotel, this was your choice.

This is truly a 5 star hotel with all the amenities you would expect to go along with that designation. Service was amazing and incredibly professional. My husband and I went for our anniversary and were given a substantial room upgrade which made our stay even better. We had breakfast at Heron's restaurant and it too was absolutely magnificent. We stay at a lot of hotels and can truly say this is one of the nicest, classiest hotels we have ever stayed in. I cannot come up with a single negative about our experience which is unheard of these days.

I travel for business and am constantly in and out of hotels. I judge everything from the moment I arrive to the moment I leave. Hands down, I can say that the Umsted may be one of the best hotels in America. The professionalism of the staff, the rooms, amenities, turndown service, and the dining options are simply the best! The walking path around the lake, the pool (in summer), and the workout room top off the stay with perfection. I have stayed at the Umsted over the last 5-6 years, and nothing has ever been out of place. And families, you'll be as welcome as I am as a business traveler.
