This was a dreadful experience from start to finish. We arrived on a Sunday evening to a deserted hotel, There was no one to greet us, envelopes were left outside for guests to open, with a code to open the main door and a code for a key safety open the room. When we opened the door to our room - which was called 'Puccini' - we were shocked. The duvet on the bed was a crumpled screwed up mess, it hadn't seen an iron and I even wondered if it had been washed. It had obviously been pulled out of the laundry basket and put on the bed, I just prayed it had actually been in the washer. We had two numbers to ring for attention, but neither were answered. As we had travelled for a few hours, we put the kettle on to make a drink, while we continued to ring for the duvet cover to be changed. No one answered and we discovered the two mugs in the room were also dirty, tea and coffee stains in both of them. In view of this I just didn't want to stay in the room, but we had nowhere else to go, we looked around but there didn't seem to be anyone else in the hotel. That also had us feeling insecure, as the location is very remote, yet there are envelopes outside giving any potential intruder the code to the front door. We had no choice but to stay and there was worse to come. We discovered the bathroom was filthy . It was so bad that both of us decided not to use the shower. The fittings are black which made the layer of dust on the radiator and the soap scum on the shower head and taps very visible. The shower tray was filthy, with dirt and hair around the edge and the glass screen was spattered with soap stains. It was all appalling. It was listed as offering a "gourmet breakfast" and while I wasn't keen to eat in such a dirty place, my partner wanted to try it. We seemed to be the only guests but at last we discovered another human, a member of staff appeared in the breakfast room. She took our tea & coffee order and as she left the room I turned my cup over ready, only to find it was even more stained than the mugs in our room ! So was my partner's, I attempted to change them with the cups on neighbouring tables, only to find they were all badly stained. The silver plated cutlery was also black with tarnish. The "gourmet breakfast" consisted of a sausage, a fried egg, two small scraps of bacon, a laverbread cake, some vine tomatoes and mushrooms that were obviously canned sliced mushrooms cooked until they were shrivelled. Thank goodness it was then time to leave !
