"Lovely food, definitely pre-book. We had a call to ask ahead of our arrival which was appreciated. The food, drinks and ambience with other travellers made the stay. Without that it would have been 3 stars. The main negative was the poor bathroom, shower was very much a trickle, the tap was so powerful it was very noisy. Could do with sealant replacing and wooden floor next to an open shower was always going to lead to water damage!"

"We were unable to dine at our hotel due to a function and they recommended The Blacksmiths Arms a couple of miles ways. We were a little anxious driving there as in was night, and the route took us down a single track country road but we arrived safely. The landlady was able to squeeze us in as they were busy and most tables reserved. The bar area was very welcoming with a good range of beers including Timothy Taylors. We were seated in an room to the rear used as a games room judging from the dart board. The decor was a bit dated with Artex and Burgundy Red panelling, but the staff were great. The menu was very reasonably priced and there was a special Burns Night selection of a menue of traditional pub grub. My wife ordered steak and ale pie, which was excellent with a large portion of tasty steak and gravy topped by flaky puff pastry. I went for Gammon steak, served with eggs, chips, mushrooms peas and carrots. The gammon steak was huge almost filling the large plate, well cooked and very tasty. the chips crisp and chunky. We finished by sharing a chocolate fudge cake with vanilla ice cream and cream. With our drinks and tip the whole meal was less than £50. Given the size of the portions and quality this was excellent value."

For anyone looking to explore Hadrian's Wall, the location of Farlam Hall is perfect and itself a good starting point for several walks. Relaxed atmosphere in a classic rural setting. As for Hrishikesh Desai, he is a true genius!"

"We stayed overnight at the inn. Don’t! The hotel is adjacent to a retirement trailer park and the hotel car park serves as an overnight stop for motor homes. At 10 degrees outside temperature the heating was not working. The room was airless without any windows. For any ventilation the door to the car park had to stay open. The room stank of cheap cleaning products, stuffy, stale, cold air. The kitsch decor is a matter of taste. Basic comfort though is necessary, especially if the charge per person per night is over $300!!!!. A thin cotton cover was the only bedding provided on the hard bed. To survive the cold I ended up sleeping dressed in 2 jumpers, and woollen leggings, and in desperation used the blanket supplied for dogs sleeping on the bed! The room lights up at night with a large green EXIT sign, which can’t be turned off. Every wall is covered in “don’t do… “ stickers. The bathroom sink missed the drain, the plastic shower cubicle had no handles to actually open the door, and a step in the middle of the bathroom caused me to fall twice during the night. The lady at reception for checkin was as scary as the place itself. The breakfast was good, but we did not sleep a wink. It was a memorable experience, but for all the wrong reasons."
