Tony’s Guesthouse at Teluk Bahang

Firstly, I want to say a huge thank you to Tony, he was very welcoming and made us feel right at home straight away. We usually stay in hotels but trying to save a few pennies we tried his home stay and out of the 5 places we have stayed in Penang, I can comfortably say his place was the best! The value for money is amazing, it’s situated in a very quiet area, the rooms are a decent size with a good bed, mirror and dressing table. The mosquito nets stop all the bugs and the fan worked great. The communal areas are well equipped with cold drinking water, a washing machine and cooking apparatus. There’s plenty of seats to chill under the fans and a great view of the landscape. There’s even a shelter with lots of bikes to choose from which are all free to use, sure they might be a bit rusty and old but they work perfectly fine and it’s much quicker than walking! The WiFi is brand new and is very fast, we watched lots of Netflix and used FaceTime in the evenings with no issues. I’d say the only improvements would be A/C in the rooms, but for RM50 a night, we really couldn’t complain! The toilets might be a bit close with nature, but that’s all part of it right? In summary, me and my partner stayed for 7 nights and might even be back sooner than expected! The atmosphere from Tony and all of the guests, along with the relaxing area and only a 5/10 minute walk to the supermarket and food area, we think you can’t beat Tony’s Guesthouse! To top it off, he even dropped us off to the nearest bus station so we didn’t have to walk with our heavy backpacks in the hot sun! Thank you Tony.

We selected a two night stay here because of the rave reviews on ***********. First impressions seemed quiet and idyllic. We were seriously considering extending our stay… glad we didn’t! Rooms are basic and beds are not comfortable.the bed covers are scratchy. No soundproofing can hear every creak and voice. WiFi barely works. Very slow and erratic. The free bicycles are rusty and poorly maintained. I didn’t feel safe using then. The roads aren’t ideal for cycling long distance to town. Location remote. 25 minute walk to bus stop as nearest stop is out of service, then another 15 mins on the bus to get to shops and restaurants. Not much in the local village of interest or to eat. Escape theme park nearby. Two bathrooms for 18 rooms! Only one shower worked. No hot water. Bathrooms dirty, hair in plug holes and buckets of filthy water sitting around attracting mosquitoes!! Despite all of above we weren’t put off because we enjoyed the scenic nature and adventure of it. In general this is more like a hostel than a guest house. Most occupants were young adults. We were given a room next to the communal lounge and kitchen area. ( in hindsight not the best for an older couple) Some residents decided to have a gathering/party into the wee hours, keeping us awake. Tried to ask Tony for a room change the following morning but he seemed in a bad mood and wouldn’t even offer a greeting. So I set a friendly request via WhatsApp which was seen but not responded to. There were other rooms available so no excuse for poor customer service. After several hours of waiting we decided to leave. Tony cancelled our booking on *********** so we couldn’t leave a review!
