I was so excited about staying at this hotel, and was really looking forward to it as a treat to myself. Unfortunately, my experience wasn’t so great. Pros: Nice front desk staff. Quaintly grandiose charm. Hot tub (tricky to get the water level right, but nonetheless fun and relaxing!). Free cookies and variety of beverages (tea bags, coffee, hot choc mix, etc.). Offer breakfast in the room. Blackout curtains. Affordably priced for the location. Easy access to the inner harbor. Not a chain. Cons: The ventilation system in the building is loud enough that, at first, I thought there was an idling truck or HVAC plant outside. Im sure many people don’t mind it at all because it’s a constant “white noise”, but unfortunately, I’m a bad sleeper when it comes to noise. I could still hear the noise and feel the vibrations even with earplugs on. Consequently, I couldn’t get much sleep and had to check out early and transfer to another hotel at the last minute, as I needed to be reasonably rested for a work event. That on its own would have been a mere annoyance if it wasn’t for how management handled the issue. They offered to transfer to a different room, which had the same issue. They refused to reimburse the 2 nights I had paid for and didn’t use, citing policy. They also insisted that the noise wasn’t an issue, and that it would be the same at any other hotel. In other words, they gaslit me. I travel quite a bit for work and leisure, and have done so for more than a decade. Across all these past stays in hotels or Airbnbs in different countries, this is only the third time that I’ve had to end a reservation early due to my own inability to sleep there, and of those, this is the first time that I haven’t received even partial reimbursement whatsoever for cancelled night(s). The one star review reflects the unfortunate way this situation was handled, rather than my overall appreciation of the hotel, which apart from the noise issue was very lovely.
