I stayed in three hotels during my almost a month stay in Baku. Merchant Baku is easily the best and the most value for money. First, the location is unbeatable. It is just next to the old town and within walking distance to many important sights such as Maiden Tower, the Baku Boulevard, Deniz Mall and the Carpet Museum. Second, the service is excellent. The staff spoke English and were very accommodating. Prasad, one of the reception manager, was very hospitable and someone which you could ask for help anytime. Third, the breakfast spread was good and served in a beautiful dining hall. Shame about the scary painting with the snakes though, I would change that one. Otherwise, the dining hall with the fireplace is picture perfect. Lastly, the rooms are big, comfortable and quiet. The only minor down sides are that (a) Merchant Baku is located in a no-car lane (which leads up to the gates to the Old Town) so your taxi will have to stop at the main road and you would need to lug your luggage for a short distance of about 25 metres. The road is flat and there are no vehicles so lugging your luggages on the road to Baku is easily done. (b) there is no writing desk in the room, so you would need to place your laptop on the small round coffee table if you want to get some work done. All in all, if there is one comfortable hotel that you are looking to stay in Baku with helpful staff and accessible to most of the sights, this is it.
