I recently visited Pennyhill Park Spa and while the setting is undeniably beautiful and the treatments were excellent, the experience was unfortunately marred by two significant issues: poor-quality dining and an upsetting staff interaction. Firstly, the food was far below the standard I expected from such a premium venue. I ordered the mezze starter (olives, tzatziki, hummus with pitta bread), but the hummus and olives were drenched in what tasted like cheap, overpowering oil. It was unpleasantly greasy and lacked freshness. My main — a mozzarella and tomato salad — was again swimming in oil and had an off taste. My daughter had the halloumi fries, which had a strange aftertaste, and her main dish — a chicken salad — smelled strongly of sulphur and tasted artificial, like plastic. It was off-putting and disappointing from start to finish. To her credit, the waitress serving us did check in a few times and asked if everything was okay, noticing that we’d barely touched our food. She was professional and attentive, but I didn’t raise a complaint. Honestly, there didn’t seem to be much point — if a simple salad can’t be done well, that in itself speaks volumes. Secondly, I had an incident in the women’s changing room that left me feeling humiliated. In the evening after getting dressed and just finished doing my hair I mistakenly used my phone totally forgetting where I was, I take total responsibility for my silly action as there were other women getting dressed ( mad moment! must of been the hunger as we hadn’t eaten all day, 9am till 7.30pm, full day of treatments) I completely acknowledge it was against policy but am sure am not the first person, definitely won’t be the last to have done something like this. A staff member approached me to inform me that there had been complaints. I immediately put my phone away and left the changing room without protest. I didn’t say anything in response — I was too taken aback by what she said next: “It’s not that type of place.” As someone from an ethnic background and not from the local area, I found this remark unnecessarily judgmental and quite offensive. I understand the policy and accepted responsibility, but that comment carried a tone of moral superiority and exclusion — implying I somehow didn’t belong or didn’t meet some unspoken standard. It left me feeling embarrassed, stereotyped, and unwelcome. In a space that’s supposed to promote relaxation and care, this experience was deeply disappointing. Whether intentional or not, it came across as exclusionary and left me feeling judged and unwelcome in a space that should promote ease and inclusion. While the spa itself is visually stunning and the treatments are of high quality, these two issues — poor food and a disrespectful interaction — overshadowed the positives. I’ve been to many spas over the years, and Sopwell House remains my preferred destination. The service, professionalism and hospitality there are consistently excellent. I have
